Aldi Plans Renovations at Oak Creek Store
Company says it needs to stay competitive with new grocery store under construction across the street and changes planned for 27th Street.
Aldi plans to upgrade the look of its store at 6810 S. 27th St., according to a proposal submitted to the city.
Exterior renovations will center on the main entrance and include new wall lighting and a silver aluminum canopy with updated "Food Market" signs.
The company will also install new mechanicals, including HVAC and refrigeration, and freshen up the inside of the store with new paint and graphics.
The changes are necessary to help keep Aldi competitive, said Marcia Sperber, the company's director of real estate, in a letter to the Oak Creek Plan Commission.
"There is a new Gordon Food Service under construction across the street in Franklin. The DOT has major plans to reconstruct S. 27th Street," she said. "With new competition and future access problems, it is important for Aldi to stay ahead of the curve and be prepared for all the upcoming changes. I want to keep our store nice and updated, so we will not (lose) our customers."
Oak Creek is a key location for Aldi. In addition to the 27th Street store, Aldi operates its distribution center for Wisconsin and Lake County, IL, at 9342 S. 13th St.
The renovation project is part of Aldi's plan to update all of its older stores to look similar to its new prototype, like the Greenfield store that re-opened in December.
The Oak Creek Plan Commission will discuss the proposal in its meeting Tuesday, which begins at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 8640 S. Howell Ave.
