Another Makeover for 27th Street Restaurant

Woodside Pub & Eatery, across the street from Wheaton Franciscan Hospital, will be replaced by a Mexican restaurant.

A restaurant across the street from Wheaton Franciscan Hospital is undergoing its second makeover this year.

Woodside Pub & Eatery, which just opened in June at 10166 S. 27th St., has closed and will be replaced by Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant.

It's not clear when the new restaurant, which was granted an alcohol license by the Oak Creek Common Council last week, will open. It appears some renovation work (including a new paint job) is under way.

The new owners couldn't be reached for comment. No one was around when Patch stopped by Monday afternoon; the phone number listed to the business is disconnected.

Whenever the new owners open their doors, they will have their work cut out for them.

The location at the south end of S. 27th Street has its challenges, as the history of that building would indicate. Greco's Pub & Eatery was the restaurant operating there at the beginning of 2012 before the owners sold the business to Francisco and Leslie Montiel, making this the third change in a year.

The Montiels told me they struggled to get business from hospital workers. And there's not much other development around it, limiting the amount of traffic that drives by.

Speaking of the Montiels, it's too bad they evidently weren't able to make it. They met in the mid-1990s when Francisco was a cook and Leslie a waitress at a Milwaukee restaurant, and it had long been their dream to open a place of their own.

The Montiels tried to make the restaurant more family-friendly than Greco's, but the interior stayed mostly the same, and I wonder if people still saw the place as a bar that also happened to serve food.

The couple did change up the menu, bringing in new pasta and Mexican dishes. The food received good initial feedback from Patch readers, while other parts of the restaurant got mixed reviews.

But just four months after unveiling the new Woodside Pub & Eatery name, the restaurant is gone, to be replaced by another.

I will pass along more details on Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant as I get them.

@RobT .... I hate to agree with you.... I would occasionally go to Greco's for a fish fry, and went to the Woodside twice for food.... the food was decent but I always forgot that they were there. Not too many people drive that way.... what's down there the hospital and a few other businesses as well as Oakwood Golf Course....

The Grecos still own the property- the Montiels and the people behind Mazatlan were/are leasing. I'm sure the Grecos would be very happy if someone were to buy. In the meantime, I disagree with "that part of 27th St. being a wasteland." If someone put in the time and energy it could be an amazing place. It is the perfect venue for local bands. Hopefully Mazatlan has improved the interior to go with the new paint job. I wish them good luck!

Yes, the interior needs a complete overhaul. The last place was trying to appeal to family dining, but I could not get past the smell of years of stale beer smell coming from the carpets. Clean it up, get a good menu, and I think more people will go.

This is a great addition to the OC area. They will need to market themselves properly and frequently to geat the word out. They should advertise as far as calendonia and Franlksvilleto the south, South Milwaukee and the OC to the north and Franklin west. They have very tough competition with Lil' Cancun, Cancun has become a powerhouse of the area restaurants and is constantly busy. Also I am Wondering if they are they same owners of the Mazatlan in Delafield, a lot of mixed Reviews on urbanspoon on that location. Good luck and I will Be reviewing

Whatever happended to the plans of the Sports Bar intended on the corner of Oakwood and 27th. Cannot think of the name of their other ventures but I think OC was toying with them on their layout plans and not enough parking for a bar.

Better yet, these two bars would open up 27th St more and more Hospital business!

It was kellys Bleachers that was supposed to move into that spot. I think that group still owns the land.

If they do something with the interior, they will do fine. I hope they scrap those banquet chairs. If they don't get rid of the chairs and change the carpeting, it will be a no go. It all just seemed to have a grime to it.
I am hoping to make it my go to Mexican place. Provide some incentives for hospital employees to meet after work. Taco Tuesday - woo hoo!

I drive by Mazatlan every day on my way to work (I live in Racine and head to Greenfield) Noticed the sign and mentioned it to my family as a place we should all try when they open as we love Mexican. The sign says coming soon so I looked them up on line, found the number and called. I got a recording saying the restaurant would be opening in Feb but no definitive date. I'll keep watching for a "now open" sign when I go by. I personally hope it will be a great place.

I think their menu is too big, or they just have not fully leaned it. our deluxe burrito was missing 1 of the 3 burritos and they mixed the meats. i called twice to make sure it was all beef they gave us 1 beef, 1 chicken and 1 invisible burrito. My drink, well, I never got it. If you work near the area they will give you a 10% discount. The food was decent, but not better than "EL Fogon". It coould be that they just need a little more time to get the kinks worked out. I am of the opinion that their prices are also a bit on the high end.

The salsa is great! After that, everything goes down hill. The staff is attentive, but a bit clueless/awkward as to daily specials. We ordered two of the combo plates: the taco meat was very watery & runny. All of the food was very bland and overpriced. I was shocked to see that a combo plate did not include beans/rice...so inexpensive and always a staple at other Mexican restaurants. They did a great job of remodeling the restaurant and now they really need to upgrade the food, however, I see that that is a problem with their place in Delafield as well. We wish you the best, but improvements in the food must be made to have the restaurant be a success.
In the future, we'll end up at El Beso.

Had lunch on Saturday. The delivery of food was prompt, and staff was great! The new decor is wonderful! Give it a try and be your own judge!
