Bicyclist Smashes Car Mirror After Driver Cuts Him Off

A 29-year-old Milwaukee man, angry with a driver who almost hit him, allegedly followed her to a gas station and broke her mirror with his hand.

Police cited a 29-year-old Milwaukee man who allegedly smashed the mirror of a vehicle that nearly hit him on Ryan Road.

According to a police report, the driver of the vehicle said she unintentionally cut off the bicyclist in the 2500 block of W. Ryan Road about 4 p.m. Feb. 20.

Tempers boiled over, however, as the bicyclist followed the vehicle to Pilot Travel Center, 2031 W. Ryan Road, and smashed her mirror with his hand.

The man then rode to the Ryan Road Park-and-Ride to get on a bus, but police caught up to him first. He admitted to breaking the mirror and was cited for criminal damage to property.

Many bicylists don't obey the traffic laws and put themselves in harms way. If there are no bicycle lanes and the lanes are narrow--be safe and don't drive there. Ryan Road is too busy for bike traffic. Be wise--it is more important than saving money or getting exercise. Drivers don't expect bicycles when they are so busy navigating all of the other aspects of traffic in a face paced life these days. There are bike trails for a reason. Don't get mad at the car drivers.....take their position into perspective too--nothing like being surprised by a bike inching up along side of you where a car would never be. Nobody really means to harm another person on purpose.

First of all the bicyclist that was cut off should not have taken the law into his own hands he should have called the police. As far has the comments that were made by Icare I would also like to respond. I ride a bike and also drive a car so I have observed behavior from both sides. First everyone needs to obey traffic laws and pay attention. Saying that bikes should stay off busy streets and stay on bike trails is ridiculous. He also said that drivers can't pay attention to bicyclists because of other aspects of traffic. Perhaps if this so overwhelming to this driver he should stay off the road.
As gas prices continue to increase and weather gets warmer there will be more pedestrians motorcycles and bikes on the road. We all need to stay focused and share the road with others.

Why didn't the driver also get a ticket for inattentive driving? She could have killed him. Totally unfair!!!

It would depend on the situation. The phrase 'unintentionally cut off the bicyclist' is pretty vague and doesn't really tell what happened. Was she turning right and cut him off as he was trying to pass her on the right? Did she turn left as he was approaching and failed to yield to his right of way?

Another sign the re-construction of Ryan Road can't come soon enough.
