Daily Recall Election Roundup: May 30

Here are the latest updates from the campaign trail in the June 5 Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election.

Every day between now and the June 5 gubernatorial recall election, Patch will provide daily updates on what's happening on the campaign trail.

Check back with this column throughout the day for the latest recall-related news.

2:07 p.m.: New Marquette Poll Has Scott Walker Up By 7 Points

A Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday shows Walker leading by 7 points over Barrett - 52 percent to 45 percent - among likely voters. Two weeks ago, Walker led Barrett 50 percent to 44 percent in the Marquette poll.

Most of the 720 registered voters were interviewed before Friday’s first gubernatorial debate using landlines and cell phones and the results are taken from the answers of 600 likely voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

12:16 p.m.: Barrett says Walker is Stonewalling on John Doe Probe

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett accused Gov. Scott Walker of "stonewalling" on Wednesday morning as the governor continues to direct contributions into a legal defense fund set up for the two-year John Doe investigation.

According to Barrett's campaign, Walker has transferred $100,000 into the fund during the month of May. The money is being used to pay for attorney fees that has resulted from the investigation into alleged corruption in his office during his time as Milwaukee County Executive.

"We are not talking about a parking ticket," the mayor said at his Milwaukee campaign headquarters after a fundraising event with Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

The governor has refused to discuss the John doe investigation and has not disclosed the donor or donors who is contributing to the fund. Walker has only said that he is not a target of the probe that has resulted in more than a dozen of charges against five former aides.

"Wisconsin deserves to know before the election," Barrett said.

11:45 a.m.: New Poll Shows Campaign for Governor Tied

A new poll from Lake Research Partners shows the race for Wisconsin governor tied at 49%-49% less than one week before the election.

“The more Walker stonewalls about whether he is the target of this investigation, whether he will release the emails that are at the heart of the probe, and why he is the only governor in America with a criminal defense fund, the more the people of Wisconsin view him as unfit for the governor’s office,” said Barrett for Wisconsin Communications Director Phil Walzak.

11:22 a.m.: Barrett and Feingold Campaigning in Madison

Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett and former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold will campaign with supporters in Madison on Wednesday, May 30.

They will be at the Majestic Theater, 115 King St., at 6 p.m.

10:42 a.m.: Nicolet Bank Business Pulse Survey Reveals Business Owners Support Walker

The Nicolet Bank Business Pulse conducted a survey which reveals that business owners believe the recall will significantly impact business and the majority back Gov. Scott Walker, according to a release from Walker's campaign.

The survey revealed that 91 percent said a reelection of Walker would have a positive impact on business, while only 7 percent of those polled found that a win by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett would have a positive impact.

The business owners questioned found that a win by Walker would reduce uncertainty about the future, taxes would go down, the business climate would improve and that businesses would hire more employees and invest in their future, according to the release. Those surveyed believed that win a by Barrett the state of "Wisconsin would see a return to big-government, taxes would increase, the business climate would worsen causing companies to leave the state, and that businesses will hold tight onto their money with lower expectations of growth for their future."

10:15 a.m.: Walker raking in the cash

New campaign finance reports show that Republican Gov. Scott Walker has raised about $31 million since he took office 17 months ago, including $5.9 million in the last five weeks, the Associated Press is reporting.

His Democratic opponent, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, has taken in $3.4 million over the past five weeks. He raised about $4.2 million since joining the race at the end of March.

If Scott were a democrat, think of how many votes he could bus in from FIB land!
This is why we need voter ID, any homeless, jobless FIB can come and vote for Barrett and send the State backwards.

No, Craig (da), not from Illinois. 15 incidences of voter fraud in 2010 in our state, none of which would have been prevented by the ALEC Voter ID law. I think Walker has more to worry about from 1. the constituents he's alienated, 2. well-intentioned supporters who fan the flames of controversy and indignation, and 3. (and most importantly) his own moral/character compass.

I surmise the only "flatlanders" who cross the border to support "the base" will be ensconced in a comfy coach emblazoned "Tea Party Express, sponsored by Americans for Prosperity."

I'm not a Walker supporter, but, even I was surprised by the report that a recent poll showed the recall campaign as a 49% to 49% dead heat. Clicking on the link in the story to Lake Research Partners and following-up with help from the Google, reveals that the firm is an advocate for liberal and women's causes.

My advice to interested folks on either side is: We won't really know which candidate is ahead for at least another week. So, for all of you Walker supporters, relax, there's nothing to worry about. LOL

Good to see the Independents are breaking for Tom Barrett.

But, sad to say that only land lines were called.

....A new poll taken by pollster Celinda Lake — who is a Democrat but is well respected by polling professionals — has found that the battle between Scott Walker and challenger Tom Barrett is now deadlocked, at 49 percent each.

The poll — which will be released later today and was comissioned by the pro-labor Greater Wisconsin Committee’s political fund — also finds that independents are breaking towards Barrett, 49-44.......

The last public poll that showed a Barrett lead was done before he officially got into the race

Republican Gov. Scott Walker leads Democrat Tom Barrett 52% to 45% in a poll to be released Wednesday by Marquette Law School.

Walker’s lead is almost identical in the new poll to what it was in Marquette’s early May survey, when Walker led 50% to 44% among likely voters.

The survey of 600 likely voters was taken last Wednesday through Saturday, and has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Consider the source on these polls, all polls....

Why are the Dems/liberals/left/anti-Walker crowd commissioning so many polls for? You don't see the Republicans doing this, do you?

A sign of desperation - the Dems are attempting to now use peer pressure to pick up votes by making it appear that the race is closer than it actually is! Once again showing how Barrett and the Dems are targeting low information voters!

OOps,
"We have researched this. We've gone back over two decades. We have never found another year in the past two decades when Wisconsin lost more jobs than any other state in this country. But it has lost more jobs than any other state in the country under Scott Walker's leadership," Barrett said.

"So, while these regular numbers clearly show that Wisconsin leads the nation in jobs loss on his watch, Walker is desperate to distract from his worst in the country jobs record. In a move that is virtually unheard of, Scott Walker is suddenly trotting out an altogether new set of unverified numbers 20 days before the election to mask his economic failure," Barrett said.

"These numbers are purely political numbers," Barrett said. "He wants these to be the gospel, rather than numbers that have been verified."

Todd Marohl

9:44 pm on Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Everything Barrett says just wreaks of a campaign in full desperation mode. Every day, another one of his lies falls to the wayside. Today it was the jobs numbers. Today was also the day that he couldn't name a single school district that was hurt by Act 10. Yesterday when asked by a reporter on three separate times what his jobs plan was he didn't have an answer. Last week his crime numbers were found to be a fraud. Now all he has left is the John Doe stuff which he knows Walker is not allowed to answer to because of DA restrictions on secrecy for the investigation. Now he is apparently trying to steer the issue back to the original issue for the recall, the public union stuff. That will be a loser for him too as virtually all polling, including democratic internal polling shows the majority of the people do not support the unions position on collective bargaining. What a loser this guy is.

Walker tax cuts went into effect January 2012 and beyond. Your 2010 taxes are factored against 2010 tax law, Walker was in office January 2011. So either you want to believe there is a boogie man in the room or you are the kind that shouldn't be allowed to manage money.

If you read the article and understand business you would get past the misleading headline. I don't have time to explain the rest to you, as a producer and job creator I don't need to educate the common workers in the crowd. Your accountant can explain the rest.

@Mike -

1) Way to try and shift the subject away from Barrett's lies with something completely irrelevant about Hendricks. But you're right, Walker's tax breaks didn't go into effect until Hendricks fiscal 2012, so it must have been Doyle that permitted her to pay no income taxes for 2010! So, where's your outrage against Doyle? And isn't Barrett saying that he would go back to the way things were - so how exactly can you support Barrett if you're actually upset about the Hendricks tax situation as you claim to be? Are you trying to pull some kind of trick on us?

2) Barrett was talking about the 2011 numbers, remember? Here, let me refresh your memory - "We have never found another YEAR in the past two decades when Wisconsin lost more jobs than any other state in this country. But it has lost more jobs than any other state in the country under Scott Walker's leadership." (Emphasis added). In answering a question about 'jobs lost LAST YEAR' from Ed Schultz on a broadcast of MSNBC's The Ed Show, Barrett replied "[h]e's cooking the books, Ed. There's no question that these are figures that he just dreamed up 30 days before the election."

Fed confirmed Walker's numbers for 2011 are correct. Numbers for this year thus far come from the same sources that the Fed confirmed numbers from last year came from. Barrett is a LIAR - but in all fairness, lies are all he has to campaign on.

Try again!

Wasn't the job numbers issue really about the fact that jobs created were not measured against job loss in the same period? When this occurs we see an approximate "wash." We need to keep the jobs we have and grow more (obviously). As long as middle class income continues to dwindle (or be locked up by new recession-caused debt), buying power will not be restored. Without customers no business can succeed (obviously). That's why Right to Work for Less is such a bad, short-sighted idea.

Ms. Hendricks has participated in a number of Koch brothers-funded events. She's as much a part of the "Sedition for Profit" initiative as any of the others (Koch, Abelson, et al).

According to Ed Schultz tonight, the only thing that's going to help Barrett at this point is a visit from... wait for it... President Obama!

Even further proof that Barrett is targeting the low information, non-thinking voter!

Not a word about jobs at all from Ed in his Wisconsin segment last night, which is a complete about face from his usual rant. Apparently, the strategy is if we don't talk about it, no one will notice that Barrett LIED and Walker was right.

As if MSNBC's credibility wasn't already in the toilet, Ed (and Barrett) were floating last night - and Walker will flush their asses on June 5th!!! Unfortunately, there are plenty of lemmings out there, so Ed will continue to spew lies on his show and quietly attempt to cover them up.

The Washington Post article from 5/30/12 referenced two recent polls showing Walker and Barrett in a dead heat, 50-50. I believe in the people of this state. I believe they will make a good decision for themselves and their ancestors. I do not believe they will vote for a man who in his most recent post, left Milwaukee County in debt and turmoil. He tried steadfastly to sell off the airport while Co Exec; the only arm of Co Gov that was self sustainable. He left college during his junior year. He left two wives and is on his 3rd marriage. He keeps leaving WI to seek $ for his criminal defense fund and for his campaign. Wisconsin voters will not vote the way billionaires want them to. Wisconsin voters are smarter than to be led by their money.

I sincerly believe most people have made up their minds and are just waiting to go vote. No matter what either Walker or barrett says, people could vote today and the result will be the same as June 5. I strongly believe Walker will beat Barrett again for many reasons. I believe it will be by a very small amount. Barrett will win Madison and milwaukee and part of Racine counties, but Walker will take the rest. 2010 repeat.

Why did Walker let Wisconsin lose a billion dollars in wind farm generation investments? Is it because the KOCH brothers own power plants in the state?

Why did Walker give himself the power to see state owned power plants without having to get bids? Why is he able to sell our state owned power plants to who ever he chooses at whatever price he chooses?

Mr. Walker lied. He wanted consessions from union workers but did not respect the consessions of the WI workers with union affiliations.

Mr. Walker promoted a devisive plan to govern without the admittance to his "divide and conquer" agenda.

Mr. Walker has given himself the power to sell power plants in Wisconsin to anyone for any money. No bids necessary; he can accept any bid from any buyer he sees fit.

Mr. Walker has declined federal money for rail mass transit. Later, too late to be accepted, he asked for the money back after it had been awarded to other states.

Mr. Walker refused federal money for wind power; billions of green energy revenue (the Koch brothers own WI power plants so this would be a conflict of interest!)

Mr. Walker uses Milwaukee bashing to gain votes from those living outside of Milwuakee (crzy! we are all in this together!)

Mr. Walker sites imaginary democrats who adopt his policies rather than cite facts or substantiated evidence of his achievements.

Mr. Walker traveled around the country to secure money for his criminal defense fund and recall election fund while neglecting the financial crisis of the state. He used borrowed money to balance the budget and then claimed fiscal intelligence. How intelligent is it to make our children and grandchildren responsible for the budget debt???

I could go on and on.....
