A 45-year-old man allegedly struck a bicyclist while under the influence in the 8100 block of S. 13th St. Tuesday afternoon.

A driver struck a bicyclist in the 8100 block of S. 13th St. Tuesday afternoon and was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated.

According to an Oak Creek police report, a 45-year-old man made a left turn from W. Willow Drive onto southbound S. 13th Street, but did not see a 25-year-old man riding his bike southbound in the northbound lanes.

The bicyclist was awake and breathing when police arrived about 3:25 p.m., but was taken to Aurora St. Luke's South Shore to be evaluated.

Police found the driver to be intoxicated and arrested him for OWI-causing injury, according to the report. He was also cited for inattentive driving.

His vehicle sustained minor damage.

The driver should have been cited and I'm sorry that the bicyclist was injured but the cyclist was also in the wrong lane of traffic. Bicycles should move on the road the same as motor vehicles and stop at lights and stop signs. I'm suprised there aren't more incidents.

As a bcyclist myself I agree, the bicyclist should be going with traffic, I often find myself going against traffic more often than I like too. However, I think the reason there aren't more incidents is because most of the people that are driving at 3:30 in the afternoon aren't DRUNK!
