Oak Creek Fireworks Are Still On

Fourth of July festivities begin at 9 a.m. with the parade and end about 12 hours later with fireworks at East Middle School.

The Oak Creek fireworks will be held at dusk Wednesday under the watchful eye of the Oak Creek Fire Department.

Because of the dry conditions, many communities were faced with a decision about whether to go forward with their July 4 display. Most are keeping theirs intact, but a few municipalities, such as Elm Grove, have postponed.

Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi said the city's fireworks will go on as scheduled near East Middle School, 9330 S. Shepard Ave. He also urged residents not to set off their own fireworks, which are illegal in Oak Creek anyway but particularly dangerous now given the weather conditions.

Oak Creek's Fourth of July celebration gets under way with the parade at 9 a.m. at the corner of Groveland Drive and Shepard Avenue. It will wind its way west on Groveland, south on Knights Place past Oak Creek High School, then down Mayhew Drive to Centennial Drive, before finally heading south on Shepard Avenue, ending at the American Legion. The Legion will host games and ice cream following the parade. The Larry Lynne Band will play in the lower Legion Hall from noon to 4 p.m. The Nashville Rejects then take the stage from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

They were on until the rather large brush fire put an abrupt end to the festivities

We were there, too. It went for about 10 minutes until they quit. It sounded later on like they started again - did they put the fire out and start the fireworks again?

The fireworks didn't restart while we were there. We waited till 10 p.m. and our local law enforcement agencies seemed like they were cleaning up and everyone was leaving.

I was wondering what happened with the fireworks... they seemed short.
