Franklin Man Charged with Robbing Oak Creek Bank

Man robs Tri-City Bank directly across the street from his trailer park home in order to pay off drug debts.

A 36-year-old Franklin man is facing charges for allegedly robbing a 27th Street bank directly across the road from the trailer park where he resides.

Joseph James Shartle was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Sept. 26 with one count of robbery of a financial institution. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison and $100,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Sept. 19, Shartle walked up to the counter of the Tri-City Bank located inside Pick ‘n Save - 6462 S. 27th St. - and handed a note to the teller asking for 50 $20 bills. The teller quickly complied with the note and grabbed a stack of $20 bills worth $1,400 and put it on the counter.

Shartle reportedly told the teller “that’s good” and walked out of the store with the money.

Police later found Shartle, who told them he had been using heroin in his trailer across the street before driving his van to the bank and robbing it. He said he then took the money to pay off $1,000 worth of drug debts and then purchased more drugs from the people to whom he was indebted.

Shartle is being held in Milwaukee County Jail on $7,500 cash bond.
