My Oak Creek Wish List
Here's what I would bring to Oak Creek if I could. What about you?
Two down, many more to go.
I'll be honest, it's been a nice little run for your pal Schaaf lately. First was the announcement of Dunkin' Donuts opening on W. Ryan Road. As a fan of their coffee and as someone who constantly works out of coffee shops, I was very happy to hear it. And based on the number of tweets I received, I'd say a lot of other people felt the same way.
Then there was the new Associated Bank inside of Woodman's. Now, this one was a little more personal, as plenty of banks already exist in Oak Creek. But since I have literally banked nowhere else in my life (I was a customer back in the First Federal days), a branch in Oak Creek certainly made things more convenient for yours truly.
But we still have a ways to go when it comes to amenities in this city. And since there's a lot of brainstorming going on with the Delphi site and lakefront, I got to thinking about my "Oak Creek Wish List."
What does Oak Creek need? Here's my own "wish list," and I'd love to hear your wish lists in the comments.
1. An Alterra at the lakefront. How great would it be to stroll down the Oak Creek lakefront on a crisp Saturday morning and stop in at Alterra for some coffee? (It could be any coffee shop, really, I just picked Alterra because it seems like it would be the most obvious choice)
2. A nice, "destination" restaurant(s). Think along the lines of Botana's on the south side of Milwaukee. Or di Carlo, to use an Oak Creek example. A place where someone who lives in, say, West Allis, would be willing to drive to for a night out because it's that good.
3. Better recreation facilities. I've heard this more and more in the last several weeks as the Delphi talks move along. It certainly seems like this community would be well-served to have more opportunities for kids to stay within the city for athletic-type activities.
4. Another nice sports bar. Nothing against the bars already here, but it can be kind of daunting for a guy like me to enter a "towny" bar and get stared at by all the regulars. Buffalo Wild Wings is a good place to watch a game, and I don't think another bar like that would hurt.
I'll stop at four (for now). What's on your wish list?

I cannot agree more with number 1 and 2! I am a sucker for locally owned business and Alterra and Botona's happen to be some of my favorites. Maybe even something from the Lowlander group (They own Hollander, Cafe Central, Trocadero, and the new Benelux Cafe). Places like these not only add value to those of us who live and/or work here, but they also have a built in customer base. It would expose a whole different demographic to the area and help fight the flight mentality that sends the younger crowd downtown or to Bay View after hours.

Oh yeah, a Cafe Hollender-type place would be excellent. Keep those young professionals from going elsewhere...
Wonder if the Lowlander group will be approached about doing something at the Delphi site.

I agree with you totally, Mark. There is SO much potential there. I would love to see a large ampitheater.

I agree, and it sounds like an amphitheater is in the plans for the lakefront. Would be really nice to have down there.

I wish city officials would stop wasting tax payer money with the hiring of external consulting and design firms. We have a comphrensive plan and Doug in planning is surely intelligent enough to design as evidenced by his power point presentation for 27th street that the mayor and council so rudely ignored. I wish the council would review and lower salaries for the city clerk and treasurer both are earning way too much close to a hundred grand a year for jobs that do not even require a college degree and decrease the amount of personnel in all departments especially inspection and health and freeze salaries across the board as well as discontinue educational programming for union and especially non-union personnel who can afford to pay out of pocket not on the tax payer's dime. Across the nation all want decreased governmental spending but here in OC the elected officials "think" they are investing in our future? Their simply investing in debt, debt and more debt while padding the pockets of WisPark and their own nests. With all the "planned Development" and tifs over the years my taxes should be going down as more people are feeding the pot m; unfortunately, per all their planning the tax base continues to rise, no new services just more fees. Let development come naturally per the comphrensive plan instead of turning down property owners request to develop. Give new bar owners a break with liquor lic fees and we'd have more fine dining not another fast food drive by.

Vocal - this doesn't really fit this comment thread, you may want to post over on this story instead: http://oakcreek.patch.com/articles/mayor-pushes-city-hall-library-office-building

Half-price books would be good, and bring back the BlockBuster next to Papa's. (Is it true that it was the leaser at fault for this move?) We sure didn't need a mattress store there, and I'm not thrilled with the Dollar Store either. A Hobby Lobby would also be great.

Oh, I would love a Half Price Books too! I should have included a bookstore on the list.
Not sure what the deal was with Blockbuster, I know they shuttered a lot of their stores and Oak Creek was one of them.

I'd like a Church's Chicken somewhere around Howell and Puetz, But I'd settle for a Popeye's or KFC.

I totally agree with the book store! I would add a steak house or a more fine dining restaurant. Also, I would love to see a Payless Shoes too (for shoe enthusiasts on a budget).

I would love a Red Lobster restaurant or something of that caliber. Also, a quilting store or craft store. Book store would be nice, Barnes and Nobles, maybe? We are between Southridge Mall, 1/2 hr and Regency Mall, 1/2 hr, so maybe a JC Penneys or Sears would be nice.
