Oak Creek police issued a warning last year to business owners to look out for fake Illinois identification cards after two incidents at Woodman's.

According to a police report, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee created more than 50 fake Illinois IDs. They were used at least twice at Woodman's last year, and three or four attempts were made using other fake IDs, Liquor Manager Linsey Knor said.

"You really can't tell the difference sometimes," she said. "Even the cop said it was hard. They were really impressed that we caught them."

A special agent from the Department of Revenue-Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement assisted with the police department's investigation, but no arrests were made.

Knor said most attempts happen near closing time, though one of the Illinois ID incidents happened just after 8 a.m.

Woodman's clerks would usually ask questions about a person’s birthday or weight to see if the information was memorized. Since then, clerks have been trained more thoroughly in what to look for.

Even with the increased training, "If you're not comfortable, tell them no. That's what I always tell my girls," Knor said.

Gary's Beer and Liquor, 9555 S. Howell Ave., saw the police department’s warning but hasn't seen many fake ID attempts.

"We've gotten like two that I can think of this whole year," said Christopher Galarza.

Chuck Potter, owner of Piggly Wiggly, 2201 E. Rawson Ave., said he also hasn't seen a fake Illinois ID and credited the Oak Creek Police Department for alerting businesses.

"Don’t bother going to Oak Creek (with a fake ID)," he said. "You've got to give the police credit for getting this out there."
