Oak Creek Students Organize State Summit On Distracted Driving
Event in Wisconsin Dells will focus on the dangers of texting while driving.
Students from Oak Creek High School are leading the charge on a day-long summit regarding the dangers of texting while driving.
The students will join nearly 800 other teens at the Wisconsin State Summit on Teen Distracted Driving on Tuesday in Wisconsin Dells.
Four Oak Creek students and a teacher participated in a national conference in Washington D.C. last year that focused on distracted driving. They were then tasked with organizing the state summit.
The event reinforces the message that texts can, and should, wait until after driving.
It will include the showing of a documentary called "The Last Text," which shares real stories about lives that were altered by texting while driving; a presentation by the Wisconsin State Patrol; and an obstacle course that demonstrates how difficult it is to text and drive.

I think this effort will help these young drivers get the message. It has to start with the end user, the driver...deciding not to partake in distracted driving and this will help drive that message home.
I also decided to do something about teen (and adult) distracted driving after my three year old daughter was nearly run down right in front of me by a texting driver. Instead of a shackle that locks down phones and alienates the user (especially teens) I built a tool for teens and their parents called OTTER that is a simple, GPS based, texting auto reply app for smartphones. It also silences call ringtones while driving unless you have a bluetooth enabled. I think if we can empower the individual then change will come to our highways now and not just our laws.
