Updated: Meijer Considering Oak Creek Store

Big-box Michigan grocery and discount store looking to enter Milwaukee market.

In addition to plans for a 192,000-square-foot store in Franklin, retail chain Meijer Inc. is considering building a store in Oak Creek, according to a BizTimes Milwaukee report.

BizTimes cited a commercial retail source who said Meijer may build several stores in the Milwaukee area and is eying Oak Creek, Pewaukee, Grafton and New Berlin.

Doug Seymour, Oak Creek's director of community development, declined comment, saying the city doesn't comment on a prospective business until a formal agreement is reached.

Michigan-based Meijer offers grocery and general merchandise. The company's entry into the Milwaukee market would signify a challenge to Roundy's dominance of the metro Milwaukee grocery market.

The Milwaukee Business Journal reported late last week that Meijer is planning a big box-type store at the northeast corner of W. Loomis Road and Highway 100.

The plans were met with mixed reviews when presented Monday to the Franklin Common Council, according to a Journal Sentinel report.
