Report: Retail Interest For Delphi Redevelopment Doesn't Fit Plans
Mayor tells BizTimes Milwaukee that retail pitched for Drexel Town Square so far doesn't line up with the city's vision for unique, non-chain stores.

BizTimes Milwaukee has an update on the Delphi redevelopment project, specifically the interest from retailers.
Mayor Steve Scaffidi told the BizTimes that while retail developers have expressed interest, the types of stores pitched so far don't match the city's vision for the project, now called Drexel Town Square. Many of them are chain stores similar to those already in Oak Creek, which Scaffidi said he is not interested in.
Scaffidi said the city wants unique businesses to help create a new downtown on the former Delphi property, at the corner of Drexel and Howell.
In addition to retail, plans also include a new city hall and library, a residential component, restaurants and junior box stores.

Ha ha, this project is going to be a big joke. But hey, at least the cronies at city hall will get nice new offices. Too bad nothing else is going to be built there. What a slap in the face to everyone who used to work at Delphi. Zero leadership. Zero vision.

what type of unique businesses are in the vision? i keep hearing that term but it's vague... some examples of what they are looking at would be nice.

This site should off been devloped as a busness park as first proposed and that was the plan for the drexal interchage until the egos of a fancy city hall took hold.

if you read the link in the article you would have read that the apartment part of it has strong interest from developers... and they wont be low end apartments. ironically, the highest cost apartments in oak creek are right along the railroad tracks too..

I see on the news that the city of Stockton CA is filing for bankruptcy protection. But hey, at least they have nice new municipal buildings.

No chain stores? A disdain for stores with an established history of doing well? That is crazy! We should only find little one off mom and pop stores that have a much higher fail rate? Not sure what this guy is thinking. How about finding a couple really sought after stores that would attract people from other communities? Woodmans is a good example of that. How about trying to find a retailer like Ikea to take up the space and surround it with restaurants and like business like they did in Illinois? I've made the 2 hour trip there on a number of occasions and I think many people would come from all over southern Wi to shop if we did the same.

Name 5 non-chain stores that you frequent....
I can't think of any that I personally go to with any regularity.
Invest in 27th street between Rawson and Puetz. Why must we flush millions down the toilet on this two corner block of land?
The real question is what are we going to do with all the land east and west of the new freeway exit? What vision do we have for this?

The mayor says he is not interested in chain stores similar to those we already have and I hope that means he will look at some we don't have - like Trader Joe's, Sachen and Anthropologie.
