Updated 2 p.m. Wednesday

The Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy killed while on duty Tuesday was an Oak Creek resident.

Sergio Aleman was involved in a crash about 12:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 43 near downtown. He was later pronounced dead at Froedtert Hospital, according to Patch's media partners at Fox 6.

"It really hit home that we lost one of ours," said County Supervisor Steve Taylor, who represents most of Oak Creek on the county board.

"My deepest condolences go to Sergio Aleman's family and friends in this time of mourning. Words cannot describe the amount of sadness and loss this tragic event brought forth. We must come together as a community and begin the healing process."

Aleman lived with his family in the Fairfield subdivision, off of Howell Avenue south of Ryan Road. He is survived by his wife, Jeana, and five children.

An emotional Sheriff David Clarke said the department "lost a good cop" in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. Click here for more coverage from Fox 6, which also has information on funds that have been set up for the family.

Flags at the Milwaukee County Courthouse and Vel R. Phillips Juvenile Justice Center will be flown at half-staff for 30 days to honor Aleman, according to Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele's office.

"Deputy Aleman leaves behind a legacy of service including an award earlier this year for his role in apprehending an armed robber," Abele said in a news release. "Milwaukee County is committed to standing with Deputy Aleman’s family and the Sheriff’s Office during their time of grief."

Sergio was an admirable man, a great father and husband, a wonderful son, a a great friend but most of all a good Christian that always liked to help others. May he R.I.P. and may God bless all his family in this time of sorrow.
