Where Are the Worst Areas To Walk To School?

The city is exploring a federal grant program that could allow for the construction of sidewalks in areas where kids often walk or bike to school.

As Patch reported Feb. 6, Oak Creek is looking into a federal grant program in the hopes of making students' walk to school safer.

The federal Safe Routes to School program could give the city money to construct more sidewalks in areas where kids often walk or bike to school. An alderman requested the city look into it because of conditions on S. Verdev Drive, near the high school and Edgewood Elementary School. But if the city's application is successful, the entire community would be studied for improvements.

Fans of the Oak Creek Patch Facebook page noted dangerous conditions in several areas of the city.

Jennifer:

Look at Shepard Ave - kids are walking on this narrow road with headphones on and NO WHERE to go. A sidewalk/bike path needs to added between Ryan & Oakwood. I had a girl on her bike wipe out in front of my car. Luckily I am overly cautious around bikes...

Tina:

13th street by west middle school, same scenario !

Jessie:

Shepard is crazy!! I don't even like my son waiting for the bus where there are no sidewalks. When there is snow, there is no where to stand but on the road.

Laurie:

Bike lanes and/or sidewalks would be great! I often see kids trying to walk home from the high school along Puetz and they have no safe place to walk. We have attempted to bike to school along Hwy 32 to Oakwood and it's not safe at all.

Are there other areas of Oak Creek that need improvements for children walking or biking to school? Let us know in the comments.

Deerfield Elementary is surrounded by terrible roads for walking/biking (especially for young kids): Oakwood Rd. Hwy 32, Elm...(all of which have little to/no shoulder or busy morning traffic). Except for the kids in the Bielinski subdivision, there is no safe route to that school.

Definitely Oakwood Rd, would be nice to have side walks that lead to Deerfield and the bike trail/ East middle school

13th Street between Puetz and Drexel is bad. No one obeys the school zone speed limit. Just a matter of time that someone will be hit near West Middle School. There is more traffic now that we have a new freeway on ramp on Drexel

Verdev between Forest Hill and Groveland has no sidewalks. HS and Edgewood kids have to walk in the road. Unbelievably dangerous, especially in the winter.
