THIS INSPIRING STORY BROUGHT TO YOU BY GRAPE-NUTS

Sam Llanas — Formerly of the BoDeans — Now Focuses on Bullying, Suicide Prevention

Former lead singer for popular Waukesha-based band is facing a new challenge in his life: a solo career and writing the score for a play about alcoholism, bullying and suicide.

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains. If you were hitting the bars on the East Side of Milwaukee in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, you are probably fans of the BoDeans, the rock band from Waukesha. Sam Llanas and Kurt Neumann introduced the nation to the Waukesha Sound and made a name for themselves in the music industry. In 2012, Llanas decided to leave the band to work on solo projects and is facing one of those challenges right now – writing the score for a one-man play about alcoholism, bullying and suicide. “I'm working with a playwright, Doug …

Patch Movie Review: Snitch

Patch has a new movie reviewer, Brett Martin. This week he's reviewing "Snitch."

The Rock turns into a Snitch in his latest film about what a father would do to save his son. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays a father whose estranged son is framed on a drug-dealing charge in "Snitch." With his son facing a hefty sentence, The Rock pleads with the U.S. Attorney (played by Susan Sarandon). He soon learns that the only way to get his time reduced is to help them find a bigger fish in the drug world. As you might guess, The Rock does just about anything to save his son. You'll be surprised to know that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson does more acting and less action in this movie. Nice try Rock...but the film seeks to make a statement about the futility of the war on drugs, only to take a back seat to its thriller elements. It's …

Which Film Should Win Best Picture at The Oscars?

Handicapping the awards is a favorite of movie buffs; this year, there is a Milwaukee-area interest in one of the nominees.

A Wauwatosa native produced one of the nine films nominated for Best Picture at the 85th Academy Awards, which are Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on WISN (Channel 12). After winning awards at the Sundance and Cannes film festivals, Michael Raisler's "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is in cinema’s most elite fraternity, along with: Which one will win? Which one should win? Tell us about your favorite — or one you think may have been snubbed — by voting in our poll and commenting below.

Argos, a tribute to President Carter, not a true portrayal of what really took place, Michelle the presenter, obviously a democratic propaganda piece. Meanwhile the film on the pursuit of Osama Bin Laden was totally dissed. I did not watch the elites patting themselves on the back, boring and high on self interest doesn't appeal to my psyche.   more ›

Thank you Mike! I totally agree. I am in management at a major area bank and I too am looking forward to the oscars. I think it's great that there is a Wauwatosa tie and am hoping 'Beasts' wins an award. The tiny budget film is competing against others with huge budgets and major actors. You don't have to be in the movie business to enjoy watching these awards. I don't consider myself low …   more ›

Want To Design a Giant Gibson Guitar?

Artist deadline to be part of the second phase of the Waukesha GuitarTown project is 5 p.m. Feb. 21.

Do you want to design a 10-foot-tall fiberglass Gibson Guitar that will be seen by thousands in downtown Waukesha? The Waukesha GuitarTown public arts project kicked off in downtown Waukesha in June 2012. Gibson Guitars agreed to a second phase, and the GuitarTown steering committee is seeking artist designs from throughout southeastern Wisconsin. The deadline has been extended to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 for the project that is to be unveiled in June 2013. In addition to the giant fiberglass guitars, regular-sized playable guitars will be placed throughout the downtown area. You can check out some of the guitars from last summer’s GuitarTown events from the Waukesha GuitarTown’s Flickr account. The following information was provided by Norm Bruce …

Whose 15 Minutes of Fame Should Expire in 2013?

If you want them to just go away quietly, we probably have listed them in our poll. Vote or add a name we haven't thought of in the comments section.

Pop culture fame can arrive in a flash. For some, it lasts decades; others see it expire in Andy Warhol’s proverbial 15 minutes. Many of the iconic names in pop culture from 2012 will be long forgotten by the end of 2013. Who are you most rooting for to land in the “Where Are The Now?” file? You can’t watch a commercial during a football game this season without an appearance by Pitbull, whose fame appears entirely attached to appearing in commercials during NFL games. That still exceeds the fame of Kim Kardashian, which appears tied to … well … something. The contest for Biggest Earworm of 2012 is almost a dead heat between “Call Me Maybe” from Carly Rae Jepsen and “Gangam Style” from Psy. Last on our list is Honey Boo Boo, the “Toddlers …

Most likely Kim Kardashian, i'd like to see fade away slowly, mainly because she's only famous for her name and what she gets in trouble for, not for her talent. Most stars are like that now a days, it's a little dissapointing   more ›

Do You Pay Summerfest Admission?

General admission tickets go up $1 in 2013, Summerfest announced this week. But do you pay for tickets at all?

Ticket prices will go up $1 for general admission entry in 2013 to Summerfest — but who really pays for Summerfest admission anymore? There are numerous ways to get into “The Big Gig” for free. In 2012, each day had a freebie deal except for July 4, which had a buy-one-get-one opportunity. For most, you have to enter between noon and 3 p.m. A few standing deals also were available. The Blood Center of Wisconsin offered a free ticket for a blood donation; the ticket was good any time.  Kapco made general admission tickets for children available. And of course the festival itself gave away 45,000 tickets to opening day, a promotion that temporarily crashed that web page. Despite those freebies, Summerfest 2012 attendance was down 8 percent …
