Sheriff Clarke’s recent comments have hit a new low. While my office has had policy disagreements with the County Executive, these disagreements have always been at the policy level, never about personalities. Unfortunately Sheriff Clarke has reduced himself to only a personality. He refuses to engage in real discussion much less cooperation with departments.
Clarke’s recent remarks regarding the County Executive and now the City of Milwaukee Police Chief are below the belt, but also entirely out of line for an elected official. If anyone owes an apology, it is the Sheriff for his comments last week regarding the County Executive.
Many Supervisors, including my office, have limited their comments after a heated budget process regarding the Sheriff’s department. Initially, the Sheriff promised the County Board during budget deliberations that he would support returning the House of Correction to a Superintendent, following evidence-based best practices in the realm of corrections. Now reneging on his promise, Clarke’s recent filing of a lawsuit to block the restoration of a Superintendent is proving costly to the County. Clarke’s attempt to control the jail and turn the House of Correction into a second County jail run by his department is at the expense of the taxpayer. Clarke’s hiring of a lawyer to use the courts to force delays is an about-face by the Sheriff who usually criticizes the judiciary. Apparently Clarke is not above using the third branch of government when it suits his view of the world.
My office applauds the County Executive for appointing an interim Superintendent. The Sheriff must not be permitted to bully the Executive, bully the Board, and bully the taxpayer. Bullies do not get to win because they are better at name-calling. The County Executive is following the policy and deadline set out in the budget. Returning a Superintendent will save money and shut down this dishonest attempt by Sheriff Clarke to thwart the will of the people as expressed through their duly elected representatives in passing a budgetary policy to reestablish a House of Correction run by a Superintendent. Clarke, himself, forced this move because he has proven that he cannot work cooperatively with others. It’s time to put an end to these expensive stall tactics and move forward together.

If given the choice between standing with the Sheriff who is on the side of the law abiding citizen and does not care if criminals are comfy cozy in their cells and a woman who voted to waste over $65,000 of taxpayer money to fund a "Shakespeare for thugs" program...I'll stand with the man with the badge. Excuse me? Mayor Barrett did the right thing, stepped into an altercation, and had his hand beaten into kindling with a tire iron. Would Sheriff Clarke have had the courage to do that?

Steve, "choo choo?" What does Clarke have to do with the choo choo? And, for the third time, what party ticket does Clarke run on?
Clarke has used your tax dollars to surround himself with a "posse" as if he's a hip hop hero and not the sheriff of a mid-size city. Judging solely by his words and actions there's a maturity question that should never arise about someone in the public safety sector. I doubt his recent posturing has anything to do with protecting county residents from the straw man of gun confiscation; if anything I suggest that this, in his mind, is what someone who wants to be mayor should say.

@ann...I have never heard of renege being used as a pejorative term. I have seen it misspelled as "re-nig", which is used as a pejorative and is taken to mean "don't vote for the black person". The context in which Patricia Jursik used the word was entirely appropriate and justified. I also find it rather amusing your statement about me. if you knew me you would realize how absolutely absurd your statement is. I started my work on the march from Selma to Montgomery. Although Lyle's stances are typically the complete antithesis to my own on most issues, I have to agree with him on the etymology of the word renege - from the Latin renego (to deny), re (again). Literally, to go back on a promise.
Good thing the author didn't use niggardly when referring to the County's budgeting and the Sheriff's office; I'm sure that would have got the vocabulary challenged in an uproar.

Well fine...so someone bastardized (def: to lower in quality or character) the English language to make a racist bumper sticker against Obama for the 2012 election.
That, however, has absolutely nothing to do with the correct use of the word in the original post. Lyle may be many things, radical liberal progressive being one, but I have never picked up a vibe (overtly, or covertly) of "racism" from any of his posts.

Supervisor Jursik should not comment publicly on political charged issues lest she lose her appearance of independence. She has posted on her web site http://www.patjursik.com/index.php/politcal-independent/ “Jursik was spurred to action vowing to represent only the interests of the south shore and battle the partisan attempt to “guarantee a veto”* for the county executive.” (My Exhibit “A”) Neither the County Executive or Sheriff are 100% spot-on all of the time, I think that an interim Superintendant of the House of Correction is not saving us (we the taxpayers) any money. Rather than talking about who is the bully, she should tell us how a Superintendant will save us money. Just like Washington DC, media shots in Milwaukee County Government are easier than solutions.

Ann, believe what you want, but while I disagree with Lyle on many issues, I have no doubt that there is not a racist bone or belief in his body. I've seen enough of his posts, and been in enough discussions with him to be quite clear on that. In fact, if you were to line everyone up from left to right with the racists being on the far left, he would be farther to the right than even most of the African Americans I have known. You are off base here, at least in regards to Lyle.
And Lyle. This should be a good object lesson to you. Now you have a taste of what it is like being a conservative, being called a racist for saying anything that disagrees with or angers the African American Community. Doesn't matter what you believe, say, do, or have done, in Ann's mind you are now forever part of the "problem".

Back to the Original Topic. While it really pains me to agree with Bren, I find myself having to. This circus side show between the Sheriff and the County Exec has gotten silly, and neither one of them are exactly wrapping themselves with glory here.
I like the Sheriff, quite a bit in fact. But ever since he got that hat, he has been acting boorish and petty. You can be honest, without coming across as a jerk. Something that seems to be missing,
This fight between the two of them is sounding more, and more, like a couple of children fighting over toys in the sandbox. Neither of them has shown me that they are ready to step up to higher office,.
Although, that being said, I would still take either one of them over Barrett.

The bullies in Milwaukee just can't stand it that Sheriff Clarke, won't go along with their political agenda. Barrett, Flynn, and Abele, all want good law abiding citizens to lose their gun rights. Not one word about focusing on the criminals and trying to disarm the bad guys. It's just the political agenda to disarm the citizens and use anything for a excuse to do it. All three of them are arrogant and rude to anyone who doesn't agree totally with what they want or have to say. This is my opinion from how I see them act and what they say. Sheriff Clarke is a "people" sheriff, who respects all of the Constitution and stands by citizens rights. He wants to protect us while others want to strip us from everything until we become nothing but slaves to their government agenda.

This whole episode is obvious to me Sherriff Clarke’s ambitions beyond county sheriff. This is his right and I applaud his ambitions. What is clear is the Sherriff’s means. He is “trolling” to the extreme base in this state who love-love the likes of Jim Sensenbrenner & Paul Ryan. He is “standing up” to “Leftists/Communists/Socialists/Marxists….”
He is a mere mouthpiece to appeal to the basest of our state. Just as the TeaPublicans can point to the Lt. Gov. and say, “Don’t look at our policies & call us Anti-Woman, we have Rebecca Kleefish, see? She’s a woman, so we can’t be anti woman.” So now they can say, “We aren’t racist, we have David Clarke. Don’t look at our policies, look at our candidate for Mayor.”
I don’t know how serious he is about these ambitions. There is quite a lot of evidence that proves there is a boat load of money in being a conservative, book writing, FoxNews contributing “victim” to liberals these days.
