In our 50s and starting parenting all over again

To Me, Age Really Doesn't Matter!

When we talked about adopting Kobi, one of the things that my husband and I worried about the most was our age.

There have been times when we have taken Kobi places and people tell us what a cute grandson we have. Or we will take him to the doctor and they will say, "Kobi, come with your grandma and grandpa." We politely correct them and I think we feel worse than they do when they apologize. It really is an honest mistake.

Today was Kobi's first day of summer camp and let me tell you, I felt so out of place. There were pregnant moms dropping off their kids and young dad's dropping off their kids. I was the "old" one.

Everybody was saying hello to everybody and everybody was so friendly. I knew that Kobi was going to have a great time.

Then I realized something today as I left -- it doesn't matter that I was the oldest one there. All that matters is that I am Kobi's mom and am so proud of him. And guess what, nobody cared that I was older and Kobi, for now, is OK with it as well.

If you are thinking of doing foster care or adopting and you think you are too old, guess again. Yes, you will get people who will assume you are the grandparents, but these children are so worth it!

Staggering statistic: there are over 150,000 foster children in the U.S. waiting to be adopted.

You will reap more rewards from these children than you can imagine.

Thanks for sharing Debbie! I'm from a large family so there was a time when my little sister, G, was on the same T-Ball team with my niece, A. My mom had the confused looks when she said she was there to pick up her daughter and her granddaughter :)

Thanks Sarah. We went to Kobi's first T-Ball game last night and of course we were the youngest ones there. Mark and I both got a kick out of it and everyone was so nice. We had a great time.

I think age must matter to you on some level or else you wouldn't be writing about it, but in any regard good for you!
