Oak Creek Army Vet Continues Court Battle With FBI

The trial on the federal lawsuit of Justin Slaby, who lost a hand during a 2004 training accident, was set to begin Monday.

An Oak Creek native and Army veteran who lost a hand in a training accident is continuing his battle with the FBI, alleging he was discriminated against because he was disabled, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports

The trial on 30-year-old Justin Slaby's federal lawsuit was set to begin Monday. The suit stems from Slaby's dismissal from the FBI academy, which he believes was because of his prosthesis he uses for his left (non-dominant) hand.

The newspaper notes the case, which has drawn national attention, could be a landmark decision for veterans with disabilities.

Slaby, who graduated from Oak Creek High School and went into the service as an 18-year-old, spent three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan before he was injured in a 2004 accident.

The case took a turn earlier this month when it was revealed that Teresa Carlson, who had been the special agent in charge of the Milwaukee FBI office, was reassigned to FBI headquarters shortly after she reportedly refused to testify in the case

Carlson is under potential criminal investigation after she told an agent called to testify to the Office of Inspector General that it would be in his best interest "to come down on the side of the government in this matter," according to a Journal Sentinel report.
