Register Online For Sikh Memorial 6K Run/Walk

Today in Oak Creek: online registration continues for Saturday's 6K run/walk in honor of the victims of last summer's Sikh temple shooting.

Residents can register online for Saturday's "Chardhi Kala," a memorial 6K run/walk honoring the six victims of the Sikh temple shooting.

The race begins at 10 a.m. at Oak Creek High School, with on-site registration starting at 8:30 a.m. and speakers taking the stage at 9:30 a.m. One of the speakers will be Newtown father Robbie Parker, who lost his daughter in the Sandy Hook school shooting.

The run/walk is free, though donations are encouraged. Donations will help support the Chardhi Kala Memorial Scholarship fund.

Chardhi Kala "is the spirit or relentless optimism: a philosophy that empowers us to persevere and grow from hardship," according to an event flyer. The event will honor Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Paramjit Kaur, Satwant Kaleka, Sita Singh and Suveg Khattra, who were killed on Aug. 5 of last year when a white supremacist gunman entered the temple shortly before a service was to begin.

The 6K is one of several events planned for the 1-year anniversary of the shooting. Also scheduled is a ceremony at the federal courthouse in downtown Milwaukee, a continuous 48-hour recitation of Sikh holy scriptures, religious ceremonies at the temple and a candlelight vigil.
