Registration Opens For Sikh Memorial 6K

The Chardhi Kala 6K run/walk will be held Aug. 3 to honor the six people killed during the Sikh temple attack last August.

Registration is under way for a 6-kilometer run/walk to be held in memory of the six Oak Creek Sikh temple members killed in the Aug. 5, 2012 shooting.

The event, called the Chardhi Kala 6K, will be held Aug. 3 at Oak Creek High School. On-site registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Participants can register online now at chardhikala6k.org

Chardhi Kala "is the spirit or relentless optimism: a philosophy that empowers us to persevere and grow from hardship," according to an event flyer.

The run/walk is free, though donations are encouraged. Donations will help support the Chardhi Kala Memorial Scholarship fund.

The event is six kilometers to honor the six victims—Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Paramjit Kaur, Satwant Kaleka, Sita Singh and Suveg Khattra, who were killed when a white supremacist gunman entered the temple shortly before a service was to begin.

The 6K is one of several events planned for the 1-year anniversary of the shooting. Also scheduled is a ceremony at the federal courthouse in downtown Milwaukee, a continuous 48-hour recitation of Sikh holy scriptures, religious ceremonies at the temple and a candlelight vigil.
