New Veterinary Clinic Provides Care Around the Clock

Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists, which opened in April, serves as an extension of family vets, handling surgeries, emergencies and other work.

Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists, which opened last month in the -anchored building at 27th and Ryan, is the only vet of its kind in town.

That's because Lakeshore functions as a sort of supplement for Oak Creek clinics like or -- somewhere family veterinarians can refer clients in emergency situations or for work outside the scope of their practice.

It's also the only Oak Creek animal hospital open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Lakeshore began in Racine in 2007 before relocating to Oak Creek, opening its doors on April 2. The company also has a location in Port Washington and recently acquired an animal emergency center in Glendale.

At 2400 W. Ryan Road, Lakeshore has expanded on services previously offered in Racine. Residents can bring their pets in for services including surgery, internal medicine, emergency services and oncology, said Charlotte Supple, director of business operations.

Oak Creek's demographics and the open spot near Ryan Road and 27th Street, with its easy access off the freeway, made the location a desirable one, Supple said.

"We were excited to move here and so far we feel things have gone really well," Supple said.

The hospital doesn't do preventative or wellness care. Calls in that regard are most often redirected to family veterinarians.

By the same token, Lakeshore has worked to build strong relationships with family vets so they are comfortable referring clients to them, Suppple said.

The Lakeshore staff numbers about 30 people and is chock-full of board-certified and experienced doctors.

"We definitely pride ourselves on having really highly-trained and experienced people on the team," she said. "Being here all the time, we don't know what's going to come through the door and we want to be able to help everybody that comes."

Their passion especially shows through the staff members working the graveyard shift.

"Being a 24-hour facility is very demanding. We have a really great staff of dedicated people that are really passionate about veterinary medicine," Supple said. "Dedication to the field I think helps them sometimes with some of the crazy hours they have to work."
