GFS Marketplace, the new 27th Street grocery store that officially opened its doors last weekend, has scheduled a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The 16,000-square-foot store, 6919 S. 27th St., is something of a mix between a traditional grocery store and a warehouse. GFS is known primarily as a food-service distributor but also has 155 Marketplace stores across the country, including five in Wisconsin.
The ribbon-cutting will include Franklin Mayor Tom Taylor, South Suburban Chamber Executive Director Barbara Wesener and the presentation of a $1,000 donation to Human Concerns of South Milwaukee.
"We are excited to be opening our fifth store in Wisconsin and believe GFS Marketplace is the perfect fit for Franklin and the surrounding communities," President Jay Zylstra said in a news release.
GFS is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The store employs about 35 people.
Grand opening festivities continue through Oct. 20, with food tastings each day and a drawing for a $300 shopping spree.
