Oak Creek manufacturer Nucor Cold Finish got the nod as the South Suburban Chamber's Business of the Year during the organization's annual dinner Wednesday night.
Nucor, which manufacturers steel bars, is the largest cold finish producer and the largest recycler of steel in North America.
The company has also been a supportive and generous corporate citizen in the South Suburban area and an active member of the chamber, said Barbara Wesener, the executive director of the South Suburban Chamber.
"The company believes in the team approach to their success," Wesener said. "Employees are empowered to make decisions and are rewarded for safety, quality and productivity."
Nucor, 400 W Burkhard Court, was a founding member of the chamber's manufacturing council and has participated in many of the chamber's activities.
Employees regularly volunteer in Oak Creek-Franklin schools, the Spanish Immersion School in Milwaukee, National Night Out, beach clean-up at Bender Park, the Oak Creek Community Center and many other activities.
The runners-up for the award were ESC Services Inc. and Precision Color Graphics, both of Franklin.
Meanwhile, Gus' Mexican Cantina of Franklin took home the Pride in Premises award, given to a company that demonstrates great care for its physical environment.
More than two years ago, Gus Hoesseni took a restaurant in a nondescript shopping strip on Highway 100 and turned it into a touch of tropical Mexico, with palm trees, hibiscus and umbrellas creating a summertime dining experience, Wesener said.
Dental Associates and Staybridge Suites Milwaukee Airport, two businesses along the Franklin side of 27th Street, were named runners-up.
More than 220 chamber members attended the annual dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The event featured a keynote speech from Gov. Scott Walker, who laid out his economic development priorities.
