Oak Creek Approves $46,000 Job Creation Grant for Women in Business

The Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation provides training and loans for businesses and entrepreneurs, and city officials hope the group will help find businesses for the Drexel Town Square development.

An economic development corporation focused on supporting women in business may receive a $46,000 job creation grant for Oak Creek.

The Oak Creek Common Council approved the grant for the Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation, a group that provides training and loans for businesses, concentrating on helping women, minorities and those with lower incomes.

"Their role would be to develop programs specific to Oak Creek and encourage that entrepreneurship," said Community Development Director Doug Seymour. "That's increasingly important, not only as we seek to find quality tenants and small businesses for Drexel Town Square, but for all areas of the city."

The funds were allocated as a Community Development Block Grant, which is issued by Milwaukee County in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD.

The council does not have final say, though, as the funding must still be approved by the county board. There may be changes to amendments to the allocations approved, according to a city report.

About $5,000 was also approved for both the Salvation Army and Interfaith Older Adult Programs.
