The South Suburban Chamber of Commerce has named The Starr Group the winner of its 2011 Business of the Year award.
The Starr Group, an insurance/risk management agency, was founded in 1956 by Robert Starr and is now under the leadership of Mary and Tim Starr.
Though it's based in Greenfield, the business has been active in the South Suburban Chamber and many other south-shore organizations, according to an Oak Creek Common Council resolution.
Runners-up for the award were Cousins Subs, on 76th Street and Rawson Avenue in Franklin and 23rd Street and Ryan Road in Oak Creek, and Precision Color Graphics, 9640 S. Oakwood Park Drive, Franklin.
The Gateway to Milwaukee, meanwhile, won the Pride in Premises award for its efforts to spruce up the area near Mitchell International Airport.
The organization has focused on physical enhancements of the area, such as boulevard gardens, street banners and public art to create a welcoming environment for travelers and help support local and regional business development efforts, according to a council resolution.
Runners-up for that award were of Oak Creek and Gus' Mexican Cantina in Franklin.
The businesses were honored during the chamber's annual awards dinner, held Thursday at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, 5311 S. Howell Ave.
