New Year’s (un) Resolution

Every year, I've been a New Year's resolution addict. This year, I'm resolving nothing.

This is the time of year, cliché as it may be, that people starting thinking about their New Year's resolutions. Lose weight, finish school, manage their budget, cut down on sweets - you know the drill.

Every year for as far back as I can remember, I've been a resolution addict, picking a part of my life I wanted to change and making (at least for the moment) a conscious effort to make it better. There was the year I wanted to learn to play the guitar, the year I wanted to join the gym (and actually go), the year I thought I'd unleash my inner artist, and the infamous year I decided that I would save first and spend second. All these years have one thing in common: another year past, and another resolution unaccomplished.

At first, I was going to write a post about how to create a resolution that would stick or make some suggestions for resolutions that can help move young professionals forward in life. Then it occurred to me that what I really want to say is, "To heck with resolutions."

This year, I'm resolving nothing. Instead of spending time thinking about what to do differently in the New Year, I'm spending it celebrating exactly who I am and where I'm at in my life today. I am alive, I have food and shelter, I have friends and people who love me, I am employed. Although I may not have everything I want, I have everything I need.

Could I lose a little weight? Of course. Read more books? Definitely. Spend more time outside? Yes. But instead of making another promise to myself that I inevitably won't be able to keep, I'm going to remain unresolved. Truth is, I'm not sure where 2012 will take me, but I am up for the adventure!
