Looking to stay close to home for a spring break? Wisconsin has a lot to offer.

Spring break is almost upon us.

While the term is often synonymous with warm locales and beach parties, not everyone has the time, money, or inclination to travel far and abroad.

The city is so close you can practically see it, but to truly appreciate it, you might consider a few nights' stay downtown. There is no shortage of unique accommodations, from County Clare's Bed and Breakfast to the historic grandeur of the Pfister Hotel. The city also features the state's widest array of fine dining, as well as museums and live theater for those looking to take in a little culture.

  • Total drive time: 25 minutes

2. Horicon Marsh

A marsh may not sound like the most ideal locale to spend spring break, but for lovers of nature it's an unparalleled attraction in this state. Sometimes referred to as the "Everglades of the North," Horicon Marsh is known for its many species of birds, especially ducks, great blue herons, and Canada Geese as well as fish, frogs, turtles, snakes and plant life. The area has no shortage of quaint inns and cabins for lodging, but considering its short distance from Oak Creek, would make for an ideal day-trip.

  • Total drive time: 1.5 hours

3. Milwaukee County Zoo

More than 2,500 animals representing 300 species are spread across the 200-acre site in Milwaukee County. The zoo is a perfect place to take the kids for a day and has many special events throughout the year. Zoo officials also encourage you to check out a new female armadillo now living in the Small Mammals Building. She is on exhibit with the male armadillo, and sources say the two have become quite friendly with each other.

  • Total drive time: 30 minutes

4. Wisconsin Dells

The Dells is Wisconsin's biggest tourist attraction. Here, there's a little something for everyone. Adults can enjoy casinos and shows, while children partake in any number of kid-friendly adventures. The Dells are especially great for those anxious to slip on their swimsuits, even with temperatures near freezing. The Great Wolf Lodge and Kalahari Resort feature enormous indoor water parks complete with slides and pool-side bars.

  • Total drive time: 2.5 hours

5. Door County

Wisconsin's peninsula is a unique and enjoyable destination featuring more than 300 miles of shoreline, five state parks, high-class accommodations as well as a busy art and entertainment scene. Often referred to as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest", Door County was named one of the ten best vacation spots in North American by Money Magazine. Door County is also known for possessing a wide array of incredible architecture, including a great many Victorian homes.

  • Total drive time (to Sturgeon Bay): 3 hours
