Mayor Reflects on Shootings In Weekly Column

One week after violence at the Sikh Temple, the Oak Creek mayor calls on residents to celebrate the diversity of the city.

Mayor Steve Scaffidi called for residents to embrace diversity in this week's Mayor's Message, his weekly column posted on the city's website.

Scaffidi said the events of Aug. 5, when six members of the Sikh Temple were murdered, was a "tragic and violent example of the effects of extreme hate and anger in our society."

He also commented on Police Lt. Brian Murphy, who was injured in the attack, and thanked those who helped calm the fears of Oak Creek residents.

"As we begin to move forward, I ask all of you to help me continue our efforts to celebrate the growing diversity of Oak Creek, to reach out to members of our community who may look or speak differently than you do, and to embrace that diversity as the best way to build a stronger city, one which we can all be proud of," he wrote.
