Sikh Temple Plans 1-Year Anniversary Events

Several public events and religious ceremonies will be held to mark the deadly shooting on Aug. 5, 2012.

It may seem hard to believe this much time has passed, but the Oak Creek Sikh temple has begun planning events to mark the 1-year anniversary of last year's deadly shooting

Much is still in the planning stages, but one known event is a 6-kilometer run/walk in honor of the six temple members killed on Aug. 5, 2012, Mayor Steve Scaffidi said.

Connected to that run/walk is a public event scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Oak Creek High School football field.

The temple will also hold a religious ceremony in which priests read the entire Sikh holy book aloud from cover to cover, temple member Pardeep Kaleka told the Associated Press. Other ceremonies and events are also planned.

Prakash Singh, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Satwant Singh Kaleka, Paramjit Kaur and Suveg Singh lost their lives when a gunman entered the temple about 10:25 a.m. Aug. 5 and began firing.

The gunman, Wade Michael Page, wounded three others, including Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy. He was then shot by a second Oak Creek police officer in the parking lot before taking his own life.
