The Academy Has Spoken

As expected, The King's Speech dominated.

The Academy has spoken, and it apparently likes The King’s Speech.

The revelation wasn’t exactly unexpected and was a theme of the night, as most of the Oscars handed out at the 83rd annual Academy Awards went to those expected to win.

The King’s Speech took home awards for Best Picture, actor (Colin Firth), director (Tom Hooper) and original screenplay. Hooper’s win was considered one of the evening’s biggest surprises, as many pundits had The Social Network director David Fincher taking home the award.

The Academy did, however, show some love to The Social Network in the form of Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Original Score for Trent Reznor’s haunting theme.

Natalie Portman became the fifth person in Oscar history to win an award while pregnant, as she deservingly took him Best Actress for The Black Swan, the film’s only win of the night. The visually-stunning Inception was awarded with Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, tying it with The King’s Speech for most awards with four.

Having earned the second most nominations of any film with 10, True Grit went home empty-handed, making its Best Cinematographer nominee Roger Deakins go home Oscar-less for the 10th time in his career.

While the winners may not have been shocking, the ceremony’s hosts' performance was a pleasant surprise. Co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway started the ceremony off with a hilarious introduction involving their inception’ing of Alec Baldwin’s dream (or was it the other way around?).

Hathaway was one of the ceremony’s bright spots. It was refreshing to have a female presence on stage and see her enjoyment and admiration for all those she was essentially performing for. James Franco, on the other hand, was good early on, but toward the end became one note and conveyed the same facial expression, reflecting a sense of disinterest until the show’s end.

In case you missed , almost all of the Best Picture nominees can be seen without leaving Oak Creek.
