Energy for Life walk Milwaukee
The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) is excited to
reach out and introduce you to our
organization and our mission. The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation promotes research and
education for the diagnosis and treatment of mitochondrial disease. The Energy
for Life walk is used as UMDF’s national campaign to raise awareness and provide
support for those afflicted by of mitochondrial disorders.
Mitochondria exist in nearly
every cell of the human body, producing 90 percent of the energy the body needs
to function. In a person with mitochondrial disease, the mitochondria are
failing and cannot adequately convert food and oxygen into life sustaining
energy. The severity of symptoms and how the disease manifests itself
varies. Mitochondrial disease is complex and not easy to diagnose, most patients suffer symptoms for months or years before they are accurately diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease. This year, the Energy for Life walk will be
held on Saturday, September 28th at
Greenfield Park (picnic area 3A). We
encourage everyone to walk whether an individual or a team of family and friends. The walk is wheelchair and stroller accessible for all and offers all
participants a fun-filled experience. Bring a picnic and enjoy some
entertainment, music, kids games, and overall fellowship and awareness.
Donations are crucial to ensure that the UMDF can continue its programs and services for those
affected both locally and nationally. Whether you, someone you love, or someone you know is
fighting this disease, we can all come together to provide support, education and research
toward finding a cure for mitochondrial disease.
