Just 4 Ewe Veterans Christmas Party is Dec. 10

Shop owner encourages residents to help make Christmas a little warmer for our veterans.

Each year, Yarn & Fiber shop in the Market Place Village accepts donations of handmade items for the Veterans Christmas Party for the Zablocki Medical Center, Woods, Wis. Each year, it amazes me how the shop fills with items for the elves to pick up and drop off for the party.

Jeff Dentice (Doc) coordinates this event for our hospitalized veterans, and each year the faces of our veterans changes. When I first started volunteering at the event is was mostly old veterans from WWI, WWII, Korean and the Vietnam wars. It was mostly men and other than the Vietnam War, they were my dad's age.

Then the gap, to the Vietnam veterans and a few more woman, a lot more my age...then a noticeable change: the faces were of my son's age, kids, and more young women. This is when it really hit me: these are not just veterans, they are someone's father, daughter, and sons. This could be my son.

It will probably never end, but doing something for our veterans is my charity of choice. I can be a voice to help make their Christmas a little warmer and not forgotten. I will beg for them. I will ask you to open your wallet and donate money. They have done so much to protect our freedom.

It is a wonderful day when the elves come with pickup trucks to get the baked goods and boxes of hand knit/crochet hats, lap robes and more. We sit and have a cup of coffee and they tell me where their travels have taken them and how excited they get when their trucks fill up. Jeff had said, "This is one of his favorite stops, everything is hand made with such love."

This year I have so many boxes and will be getting more. Groups of knitters are clicking away making warm snuggly hats for the party. A north side knitting group has also joined up with our south side group and it is just heartwarming to see the response.

I will still take baked goods, or any food item on Friday the 9th, from 10 a.m. to 2pm. This is their last run for pick ups. So if you want to make a veteran's Christmas a little brighter, stop in and make a donation. It will make you feel better too, I promise.

This is just a cute little ditty:

Monies that are donated goes toward bingo prizes, which are a big hit. The day after the party the domicary is busier than ever with shoppers from the night's winnings!!
