'Tis the (Wedding) Season!

In the end, it's about getting married. Or is it?

It's that time of year again. Weddings galore. Including mine -- later this fall!

Alright, I'll admit it. I'm pretty old as far as traditional brides go. I'd probably be considered a 'spinster' in the olden days. I bet my parents thought I'd never get hitched!

Well, it's 2012, and the world is supposedly ending (according to the Mayans) so of course THIS is the year I'm tying the knot.

This is my first (and only!) wedding, so naturally, I'd like to actually have a few traditions included in our festivities. However, since I'm a spinster, I'm not planning on going all out with every bell and whistle. Even so, there is quite a wad of cash being thrown around to get the details put in place to make this happen.

I've never planned a wedding before so I had no idea about what I was getting myself in to. Every little item nickel-and-dimes your budget to death.

Besides cost, the timing of our wedding is interesting as well. We got engaged at the end of December, then started looking for venues to figure out what date we would be able to get married. Most places are booked about a year and half in advance, it seems. Our date (a piddly 8 months away) was really quite difficult to book. From what I am told, we did it backwards. You see, most couples pick a date first, then try to find a venue. We were at the mercy of venue availability. Who are these couples that want two year engagements just so they can book a certain venue?

With 8 months to go, we booked our venue and started slamming out the rest of the major items.  Photographer, DJ, officiant, caterer, dress! Now at 5 months and counting, we're starting on the smaller details. (Margarita machine, anyone?) Slowly but surely, it's falling into place.

I'm not really stressed about getting the rest of the event together. My mom has been absolutely fantastic helping us out with this. We couldn't do it without her!

That said, I'm wondering if we're missing out on anything by putting this together so quickly? Is there a reason people are engaged for so long before actually making it official? Or, maybe I'm just watching too many basic cable programs about wedding planning. What's the opposite of Bridezilla? Bridechill-a?

In the end, it's about getting married.   Oh, and the cake!
