Patch Picks: Mother's Day

Here are some fun ways to celebrate Mother's Day in and around Oak Creek.

It's Mother's Day, so many of us will likely be spending the day with that special lady. This area has all sorts of fun activities that any mom would enjoy, especially the ones specifically dedicated to her.

1. Boerner Botanical Gardens

Friends of the Boerner Botanical Gardens will host a special Mother's Day Celebration from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Milwaukee Cupcake Company will provide materials for cupcake decoration. The event also includes stations for spring planting and making floral-bow magnets. Children can make rose felt pins for their moms. Admission is $5 per child.

2. The Milwaukee County Zoo

All mothers receive free admission this Sunday at the zoo. Special outreach centers will be set up throughout the zoo to educate patrons on the importance of saving orangutans, in honor of their special mother-son pair, Mahal and MJ. At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the zoo will present the documentary Green in the Peck Welcome Center Theater. Hours of operation on Sunday are 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

This weekend marks the annual Mother's Day Native Plant Sale at the Nature Center. From 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, you can buy beautiful native plants from a local nursery. Also, a special Wildflower Hike will commence at 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free; parking is $3.

4. Area Brunches

Brunch is a popular Mother's Day tradition and there will be no shortage this Sunday. The Oak Creek Community Center will hold a special brunch, as will Bay View's Cafe Centraal, the Milwaukee Public Museum, the Harley Davidson Museum and Sheridan's in Cudahy, among many options.

5. Market Place Mother's Day Art Fair

If you're too busy to celebrate Mother's Day this weekend, you might want to consider attending Market Place's seventh-annual Art Fair on May 15. Admission to the event, which boasts 50 exhibitors,  is free. The fair will run all day, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
