Brothers Accused of Stealing Manhole Covers from Silver Spring Drive

Duo apparently sold hundreds of pounds of cast metal to local recycler, authorities allege.

Two Milwaukee brothers are accused of stealing sewer grates and manhole covers while driving down Silver Spring Drive in Menomonee Falls.

Andre D. Jackson, 47, and Arnold Jackson, 48, were charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court last week with one count of theft. If convicted, they each face up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 12:35 p.m. Oct. 13, 2011, a man was driving down Silver Spring near Davians Banquet and Conference Center when he noticed the Jackson brothers picking up a sewer grate in a construction area and put it in the back of an old pickup truck. He figured the two were stealing the grate, so he called the Menomonee Falls Police Department, then began to follow their truck as they drove east.

An officer found the truck and pulled it over, and saw sewer grates and manhole covers in the back. Andre Jackson said they were "picking them up along the way" because the items were junk and the construction foreman had given them permission to take the metal. Similar items were reported stolen in day before the incident and he denied being involved, however, officers found receipts inside the truck from a metal recycler for the sale of hundreds of pounds of cast metal.

Arnold Jackson claimed his brother was the only person putting stuff in the back of the truck, but he's also facing much bigger issues as he was also charged with one count of burglary for allegedly taking a lawn mower, two crowbar, two hammers and a weed trimmer from a home in the W14800 block of Silver Spring Drive in July 2011.

During that incident, the victim told police she was allowing the Jackson brothers to come to the home and take scrap metal, but while she was gone, someone took the items out of her garage. Police went to Arnold Jackson's home in Milwaukee and the stolen lawn tractor was in the backyard.

Both men will make their initial appearance in court Nov. 19.

Shut the metal recycler down for knowing buying stolen metal. This is a huge problem under the Obama economy and these recyclers are accomplices to the crime by offing them cash to unload the loot.
