Injured Cop Is Walking; Fund Set Up For Family

Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy was up and walking Tuesday, Police Chief John Edwards said.

"He's progressing amazingly," Edwards said in a news conference Wednesday. "We're very, very thankful for that."

In addition, BMO Harris Bank announced Wednesday that it has set up an account to benefit Murphy and his family.

The account is located at the branch at 8900 S. Howell Ave., but all M&I and Harris locations will accept donations. The bank said it is contributing $10,000 to the account.

"We commend Lt. Murphy and the brave men and women of the Oak Creek Police Department and our hearts go out to the Sikh community — not only our friends here in Wisconsin, but to Sikhs everywhere," said Brad Chapin, executive vice president, personal banking.

Murphy was the first officer to arrive at the scene and encountered a victim in the parking lot. While tending to the victim, and shot at least eight times, including one that struck him in the neck.

But as officers ran to his aid, he waved them off and ordered them to help people in the temple.

His story has captured the attention from people around the world. The Facebook page "Oak Creek Hero" has more than 2,100 fans, and residents  at Oak Creek's National Night Out Tuesday.

BMO Harris also announced it is contributing $10,000 to the Sikh Temple to help those impacted by Sunday's events.

"The Sikh Temple is an important part of the Oak Creek community and we wanted to assist their efforts in supporting their members and their families," said Frank Carini, market manager for M&I.
