The driver told police he fell asleep before crashing the vehicle on the west side of the E. College Avenue tunnel.

A 23-year-old South Milwaukee man told police he briefly fell asleep behind the wheel before swerving and hitting a guard rail on the west side of the E. College Avenue tunnel early Sunday morning.

The crash, which happened about 3:30 a.m., sent one person to the hospital with a possible broken nose, according to an Oak Creek police report. The vehicle sustained severe front end damage.

Police said passengers had been drinking but the driver had only one beer about 10 p.m. that night. He passed field sobriety tests and had a preliminary blood-alcohol content of .02, below the legal limit to drive in Wisconsin.
