Garage Burns Down in Late Night Fire; Cause Unknown

Authorities do not yet know what sparked a fire in the 800 block of E. Mackinac Avenue, just off E. Drexel Avenue, that started just before midnight Friday.

There was once a detached garage that stood next to a home in the 800 block of E. Mackinac Avenue.

But by weekend's close, the garage was gone, destroyed by a fire that broke out just before midnight Friday.

Police arrived about 11:45 p.m. to find the garage fully engulfed in flames and smoke, according to an Oak Creek police report. Neighbors reported hearing explosions.

No one was injured in the fire; residents were standing out front when police arrived, according to the report.

Little remains of the garage now. So far, the cause of the fire is undetermined, Battalion Fire Chief Tom Jonson said.

According to the police report, 5 p.m. Friday was the last time a person was in the garage. The overhead door had a broken spring on it, so it could not open without the force of a couple of people, and the side door was locked, according to police.

Vehicles also appeared to be destroyed. The total loss was estimated at $50,000. The fire also caused small damage to siding at the rear of the house.

Police officials could not be immediately reached for further comment Monday.
