One man has died after a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 94 near Puetz Road late Monday.

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the crash involved three semi tractor-trailers and a minivan in the northbound lanes of I-94.

The man who died was driving the minivan, which was registered in Illinois. Two of the truck drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

Oak Creek resident (and ) Jennifer Moreau lives near the scene and said she heard a "thunderous" noise as she was drifting off to sleep.

That noise was followed by flashing lights and sirens, and it quickly became apparent that what happened on the freeway was more than a fender-bender, Moreau said.

"It was pretty insane, actually," she said.

An initial investigation showed it was an "accordion"-type crash - when the first semi slowed down, a chain reaction ensued and the minivan was hit between the second and third semis, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A Flight for Life was called and later cancelled when it was learned the man had died. The expressway was shut down overnight Monday and fully re-opened by mid-Tuesday morning.

The sheriff's office is still investigating.
