Police: Alleged Drunken Driver Did 80 MPH on 27th Street Before Accident

A man was arrested for drunken driving following an accident on 27th Street Friday night.

According to a police report:

A witness reported the driver followed him too closely, then passed him on the right in the emergency lane and accelerated to about 80 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The driver then struck a sign while pulling into the parking lot of Toscana Italian Ristorante, on the Franklin side of 27th Street in the 8100 block.

Officers found him with red, glassy eyes; slurred speech; and emitting an odor of intoxicants. He failed field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol content of .11, above the legal limit of .08.

He was arrested for drunken driving and failure to keep vehicle under control.
