Apartment Expansion Plans Take Step Forward

But construction at the Southfield Apartment complex is still a few years away.

A plan to add seven more buildings at the Southfield Apartment complex, on 13th Street between Rawson and College avenues, took a step forward this week.

However, don't look for construction to start anytime soon. A representative of Wimmer Communities, which owns the apartments, said work is still a few years off.

Wimmer plans to construct 56 additional units, bringing the apartment complex up to 22 eight-family buildings and 232 total units.

The company has a contract to purchase two neighboring properties for the new buildings, but is still negotiating with one other property owner.

Between those negotiations and a project at another Wimmer property in Oak Creek, the Centennial Park apartments, the company does not have any immediate plans to begin construction at Southfield, said Mark Wimmer of Wimmer Communities.

The Oak Creek Common Council on Tuesday approved a zoning change that would allow the expansion to take place.
