Drexel Interchange Groundbreaking, Unveiling of Delphi Plans Today

Gov. Scott Walker will attend event at St. Mary's Coptic Church.

Update 4:30 p.m. An earlier version of this story said that U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan will be at the groundbreaking, but he will not be attending.

After years and years of discussions about an interchange at Drexel Avenue, the day for a groundbreaking will finally come Friday.

A ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. at , 1521 W. Drexel Ave. According to a media advisory, state Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb will host the event, which will include state and local dignitaries.

The advisory didn't list the dignitaries, but two sources said that Gov. Scott Walker is among those scheduled to attend. Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi and State Rep. Mark Honadel will also speak.

It's the first new interchange in Milwaukee County since the expressway was constructed in the 1970s, according to a news release. Local officials see it as a driver for economic development in the area, particularly for the former Delphi redevelopment project, and also a benefit for Northwestern Mutual's facility on 27th Street. Construction is expected to be completed in November.

At the event, Oak Creek officials will unveil plans for the Delphi site, as first reported by BizTimes Milwaukee and confirmed by Oak Creek Patch.

, called Drexel Town Square, essentially creates a new downtown for Oak Creek. It features a town square in the middle and a walkable Main Street with retail, restaurants and a new library and city hall.

Plans also call for housing on the western end of the development, likely some combination of apartments and condominuiums.

Residents planning to attend the groundbreaking should enter from 13th Street due to the construction on Drexel.

Oak Creek Patch will have complete coverage of the Drexel Interchange groundbreaking and Delphi plans Friday.

This is great news for Oak Creek, and a great chance for me to personally thank Governor Walker for the $900 drop in my property taxes this year!
Resident of O.C. Paul May 04, 2012 at 01:50 AM
Your property taxes went down??? you might want to check your tax bill. Mine went up almost $75 despite my house being reassessed almost $20,000 less than the previous year.
Resident of O.C. Paul May 04, 2012 at 02:03 AM
A senseless waste of the taxpayers money forced onto the residents by dirty deals struck by the former mayors and the tyrannical Wis Park/We Energies. I can see nothing good coming of this especially since we already have a usable city hall. Technology being what it is today we don't need a bigger city hall to house a mainframe computer, than we already have. At the place I work the mainframe takes up a fraction of the room the old one did. Also, all the current city hall needs is a bit of TLC and a minor face lift, which would have cost vastly less than a new building. I can't wait for the bill on this to come, and hear the outcries from those that backed this frivolous waste of the taxpayers money.

Drexel town square....may as well just call it bayshore. more disappointment coming from the city council.
Randy S.M. May 04, 2012 at 12:47 PM
You Walker stalkers are idiots. Why don't you do something productive with your life instead of sponging off hard-working taxpayers.
LuvOC May 04, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Stay classy David. It's a ceremony for Oak Creek....not for you and it is at a church. Oh, that's right........
LuvOC May 04, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Mine went down $130....but MATC and city of Milwaukee went UP....see the connection???
LuvOC May 04, 2012 at 12:57 PM
I wasn't going to go....but I will be there with you Mike!
LuvOC May 04, 2012 at 01:04 PM
Seriously David, you have your Recall election. Do you realize that Walker just ignores the protestors and that if you do get on the news....a majority of mature citizens look at YOU with digust, not the governor. There will be people there that want to hear what our politicians have to say, regardless of personal beliefs. I would have never thought of interrupting a charity walk or event that Diamond Jim Doyle was speaking at. Do you know why? I was not raised to be an entitled, loudmouth crybaby. Have a wonderful day.
Resident of O.C. Paul May 04, 2012 at 01:14 PM
Jill, I live in Oak Creek. I got my reassessment, and the value of my house went down $20,000, Which should mean that I should pay less in property taxes; after that waited for my property tax bill. When I got my property tax bill I pulled out my property tax bill from the previous year (property tax bills list assessed home value) and compared them...my taxes went up despite a lower valued reassessment. F.Y.I. I'm not stupid, and I know how taxes work.
Resident of O.C. Paul May 04, 2012 at 01:17 PM
Also Jill, MATC is not a separate city. MATC = Milwaukee Area Technical College pays property taxes to Oak creek, so if their taxes went up, then Oak Creeks property tax rates went up...See the connection?

Another gift from wi park that keeps on giving Oh thats right they control the city .
Mike in OC May 04, 2012 at 02:33 PM
@markshaaf .... apparently this groundbreaking is by invitation only. i was denied access to the event by the ocpd.
jack ryan May 04, 2012 at 02:47 PM
Our tax bill went down because our property value is less. Thanks George Bush for this economy that sunk so low even Obama had a hard time pulling us up. And thank you democrats for creating the whole banking mess.
jack ryan May 04, 2012 at 02:48 PM
And Bayshore is bad? Whats your idea of good? Walmart?
jack ryan May 04, 2012 at 02:52 PM
Well keep doing a good job and you will be recognized. This is so much better than that useless insert JS puts out on Wednesday. Who cares what the news is in Greendale. Oak Creek news is practically non existent in that section.
Mike in OC May 04, 2012 at 03:18 PM
@jack ryan .... i too enjoy the oc patch, it has been a great source for local information. however in the last two weeks i have been extremely disappointed. this current article implies that the event on drexel is open to the public and when i tried to attend i was denied access by the ocpd (they told me it was invitation only). last week walker was at kei in oc and the patch incorrectly listed the address as w. rawson ave when in fact kei is on e. rawson ave.
Mark Schaaf May 04, 2012 at 04:03 PM
Mike - I thought it was open to the public too, the media advisory implied that it was. I barely got in myself. sorry about the rawson mix up.

The real OC . You must not live in Oak Creek , I do .My property taxes went up last year and the year before and I am sure they will increase again this year. I am happy for this land to be developed . I am not happy that once again the needs of some over shadow the needs of many. This may not be the venue for a political rally but Walker was a mistake and now we need to correct it by getting him out of office.
Theresa May 04, 2012 at 05:49 PM
Randy my husband and I both work, hold degrees, have a beautiful home and put 3 kids through college . My husband retired from Delphi with 30 yrs and now has a full time job . We do not sponge off anyone and I am so tired of Walkers arrogant attitude, his lies and him putting his rich buddies before the people of Wisconsin. Delphi was a union shop and for him to be there at the ceremony was an insult . I was pro Walker at first but the more he went on the more i regretted it. We have him working on behalf of the rich and then Dems wanting to hand over our money to every low income program that comes along. I wish there was a medium.
The real OC May 04, 2012 at 10:24 PM
I live in Oak Creek, and I'm well aware of my property taxes. They went down $900 this year, and many of my neighbor's bills went down very significantly. When politicians get it right, I'm going to give them credit!
Tired May 05, 2012 at 02:33 AM
Glad you got a $900 tax break, while some of us were laid off or are soon looking at losing 30% of our salaries. The selfishness of some is utterly disgusting.
Scott May 05, 2012 at 02:39 AM
MATC does not pay any property tax
OC Homeowner May 05, 2012 at 03:23 PM
David in OC I hope you will be ready to accept the winner of the re-election of our best Governor in years, Mr. Scott Walker. Oh yeah maybe you Liberals will try another recall and try and cost the state millions again. What a bunch of cry babies you and your clan is. I like many of my fellow OC homeowners were very happy to see our taxes go now.
Jan May 06, 2012 at 09:51 PM
I'm glad that something useful is happening to the Delphi property. I hope that they restore the dome and place it right in the middle of Drexel Town Square (for if it wasn't for that little bit of history, Oak Creek who have struggled for growth). So, lets include this historic piece which helped make the Apollo the space program so successful and Oak Creek prosper. It would also be a reminder for all those who had worked at Delphi, from the very beginning to the end, that they were and still are an important part of Oak Creek's new stage of growing and development for the community. I know I would be proud of that as a former Delphi employee.
