Governor Appoints Plale As Commissioner of Railroads

Oak Creek's former state senator lands job with Walker administration.

Oak Creek's former state senator, Democrat Jeff Plale, has been appointed by Gov. Scott Walker as the new commissioner of railroads.

His primary responsibility will be determining the adequacy of warning devices at railroad crossings, according to a news release from the governor's office. The commissioner also deals with other railroad-related regulations, such as installation of new highway rail crossings and replacing, repairing or closing existing crossings.

The news release notes that Plale's district, which included Oak Creek and other communities along the Lake Michigan shoreline, had multiple rail lines and businesses that relied heavily on rail service. He also chaired the Senate Committee on Commerce, Utilities, Energy, and Rail and served on both the Senate and Assembly transportation committees.

"Jeff Plale's distinguished record of public service and experience, both as a state legislator and as a state administrator, make him an excellent choice to serve as railroad commissioner," Walker said in the news release. "He will work hard to maintain a strong rail infrastructure, which will help the private sector create jobs in Wisconsin."

Plale said his focus will be on improving rail infrastructure and safety.

"I understand the importance of a comprehensive transportation infrastructure and the profound impact that rail has on commerce and job creation," he said. "I thank Governor Walker for calling on me to continue to serve Wisconsin and I look forward to the challenges ahead."

Plale was state senator for eight years before he was ousted in a primary last year by Sen. Chris Larson. Incidentally, his appointment to a six-year term is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
