Health Dept. Works To Reduce Falls for Older Adults

Injuries from falls are a significant public health problem, Oak Creek health officials say.

With September being Fall Prevention Awareness Month, the Oak Creek Health Department is putting on a new workshop geared toward helping older adults avoid faills.

Stepping On is a weekly two-hour class held from 1-3 p.m. for seven weeks beginning Sept. 29 at . The workshop will help participants identify why they fall and different ways - like strength and balance exercises and home safety check suggestions - to prevent falls.

The workshop, held thanks to a grant from the Medical College of Wisconsin's Injury Research Center, is for those who have fallen and those who fear falling. Fall injuries are a significant public health problem causing needless pain and suffering as well as emotional and financial stress, according to a health department news release.
