Honadel Unveils Jobs Plan

Oak Creek's state representative says program would benefit job seekers, employers.

State Rep. Mark Honadel is presenting a job-creation proposal that he says would give work to job seekers and give employers a tryout period.

Under the plan, which Honadel calls "Wisconsin Wins," unemployment claimants could get part-time training jobs with interested employers, with the possibility of permanent employment afterward, according to a news release from Honadel's office.

Job seekers would continue receiving unemployment benefits while participating in the voluntary program.

Honadel says the proposal benefits both employers and the unemployed: companies increase the probability of a good hire, while job seekers get an opportunity to show off their skills and potentially turn training into full-time employment.

The program was modeled after a similar effort in Georgia, according to the news release.

"We must be open to new, creative solutions to get people back to work," said Honadel, a Republican from South Milwaukee whose district encompasses Oak Creek. "My plan will help match employers with potential employees for training that may lead to full-time jobs.

"I see the Wisconsin Wins program as a win-win. With the insolvency crisis in the state's unemployment reserve fund, this may be one way to decrease the large number of claimants and reduce their duration. Most importantly, it could open the door to new jobs people so desperately need."
