Mayor To Meet With VP on Gun Law Changes

Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi is traveling to Washington, D.C. this week and will be part of a meeting on gun violence with Vice President Joe Biden.

Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi is traveling to Washington, D.C. this week and will be part of a meeting on gun violence with Vice President Joe Biden, according to a WTMJ-TV report.

Scaffidi leaves Wednesday for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and while there will be part of a select group meeting with Biden, according to the report.

Biden is leading a task force seeking remedies for gun violence and is expected to present a comprehensive package of proposals soon.

The mayor has been outspoken about the need to come up with solutions to gun violence. When Biden's task force launched shortly following the shootings in Newtown, Scaffidi joined other mayors, including those in Aurora, Colorado and Blacksburg, Va., on a conference call with Biden.

Scaffidi previously told Patch that as the mayor of a city that went through a mass shooting, he feels an obligation to be an active participant in the debate. He organized a community forum Saturday that focused on how each person can play a role in preventing the acts of violence seen in Newtown and the Oak Creek Sikh temple.

Scaffidi said Saturday's forum is only the starting point of what will be an ongoing conversation.

"I've said all along this is not going to be an easy thing, but I think I tried to pinpoint there can be some easy parts to it," he said in an interview following the event. "The little things in life that make us more safe, make us more secure."

My Mayor give this some serious thought!!!! You will be voted out!!! Oak Creek will more than likely loose numerous residents if our Mayor decides to push thru some out of control gun laws that only effect law abiding citizens. How about before anything is enacted you put it up for a referendum and allow the people to speak? We Know Mr Mayor you are not willing to negotiate just as you did when you passed the new town center stuff. All done under the cover of darkness.

How about starting a conversation on exactly what went on here in OC at the Temple. How about allowing the residents to ask critical questions instead of controlling questions by refusing residents the ability to step up to the mic and ask the ugly he doesn't wish to acknowledge. Who is paying for his trip, travel, lodging, meals and other expense? He and Edwards are traveling a lot post the Temple event for awhile Edwards voice mail contained the message he was out of the country? Vote him out? I don't know if that's possible considering the residents of OC don't vote, don't pay attention to the issues, don't have a clue and couldn't care less. They do sign recall petitions when delivered to their door. Perhaps that's the way we will have to go if he doesn't refrain from his involvement with this council of mayors, his political agenda and his drive for political recognition. I called city hall no one knows who is financing their travels.

Go figure they dont know where the funding is coming from. I also like the fact OC raised my property taxes saying because my house is worth less they have to charge more. Yet garbage service is now privatized and winter snow removal is or must be a low priority this year as my street did not get any salt or anything until yesterday. Now the Mayor is no doubt traveling on the tax payer dollar pushing an agenda thru that serves to benefit him and his Sikh Temple buddies. Obviously they are a pretty big group and Scaffidi is just looking to WIN their votes next election.

Solid Waste, reserve fund, and others were stripped by Bolendar to increase spending without raising the mil rate. Scaffidi now has to deal with what is left over which he as a council member voted to support against the voice of the residents. Privatizing garbage this year saved money but they didn't lay off one person in streets now did they or transfer any to other departments. City is not filling retirement positions, plus many if not all equipment operators must be Operating Engineers, a higher pay scale. So when you see the guy mowing the cattails in the ditches remember he's earning top bucks to mow and plow. Privatized garbage collection was not a good move as next year the contracted agency will raise the price. If we've sold the expensive trucks we'll be in a catch 22. The mil went up but the levy stayed the same so most paid less property tax. The pay scale rates of city employee's is way out of wack with some employee's with overtime earning more than their supervisors, but your not supposed to know this fact and they don't know how to fix it. Check out the library budget in which most spending goes to high salaried uneducated employees and the health department. Richards stripped health dept. to one full time employee after all they can't provide service to residents other than the inoculation clinics. The feds will cut aide to the states to balance the national budget leaving muni's with less state aides and our taxes will continue to rise to finance debt..

Now, add to above post, the fact that we unlike other communities receive nearly seven million annually from We Energies. For housing the dirty coal plant the resident's didn't get any tax breaks on as recommended by our Madison elect (Honadel and Plale) who created law to protect utility revenues from the pot of shared state revenues. The problem is compounded by the fact that the EPA was successful in passing needed legislation governing Mercury Emissions under Obama. This means some coal plants will face closure including the old units and perhaps new at the OC plant. I cannot get Air Emission data in understandable form telling me how much pollution the plant is currently producing which I suspect exceeds projected and allowable limits. Considering we receive more funding from the utility company than we recognize from all local property tax were being forced into rapidly rising property taxes, possibly bankruptcy. Were in deep financial trouble directly related to Bolendar's reign, contracts with We Energy, and unwise, on-going, debt acquisition commitments primarily lakefront and delphi development. Bottom line is your paying more and getting less and the problems is going to get worse as we continue to pay city employees more than they could ever earn in the private sector. I'm not so sure about the benefits as city is trying to take them away, making them pay more for health which I totally disagree with as it raises health costs across the board for all for less.

Instead of all the speculation about the Mayor's trip to the Mayors Conference in DC, why don't you just wait until he returns to Oak Creek and ask him your questions. What other traveling has he been doing? Same with the Chief...I believe he was on vacation when he was "out of the country". Also, to Patriot: I'm fairly certain new gun control laws are done at the state and federal level, not in the city of Oak Creek.
Patriot January 16, 2013 at 08:25 PM
Be Logical-Well your incorrect on just about everything. Both the Mayor and Mr Edwards have been traveling since the sikh temple shootings. The city can impose certain restrictions that apply to gun control. They can promote gun control via manipulation. So stop with your lets just sit back and see attitude. There are citys in Iowa that ban weapons within city limits. Let me clarify they ban concealed weapons within city limits.

Hey Logical, Do we ever get honest answers "if" were even allowed to ask? Have we received any feedback from their trip to Vegas? Not that I'm aware of and How much did it cost? I couldn't get the numbers or again the projected costs of either Scaffidi or Edwards trips about the country. These guys can't answer our questions but they are representing you and I in forums? Do you really think they are competent to do such when they can't manage their own affairs in our town? I certainly don't. I cringe to think Edwards was at John Hopkins. Did he add anything constructive to that group? Why was he there and just what came out of it that is beneficial to our city? Were a blue collar community that votes republican. We have a president that claims victory with a 4.5% tax increase. A president that wants 23 empty executive orders on gun violence and forgets gun violence is only 20% of the violence problem and isn't the cause but the action. Were in deep trouble as a nation when we can't even control local politicians. HE shouldn't even be a member of the Mayors against illegal guns, He shouldn't be in Washington on the tax dime. He should be here promoting open discussion and promoting our views not those of government is my best take.

"Rosie," what trip to Vegas? I have complete faith in the Mayor and Chief. They are wonderful representatives of our city. And the fact that other people/organizations invite them to attend conferences, tells me others feel the same way. Learning new things at the US Mayors convention cannot hurt anybody. From what I read on their website, over 300 mayors are in attendance. Getting new ideas and sharing OC ideas is not a bad thing------ it's called collaborative learning.
Patriot January 19, 2013 at 03:12 AM
@Logical-You really need to take some time and better inform yourself. The Mayor has joined a select group of Mayors, called Mayors against guns!! The recent trip to DC was just that. A sit down with VP Biden to discuss gun control initatives. Im sure learning what he can do legally without violating the Constitution. Stop kidding yourself Logical. Just a New York rammed thru their anti gun agenda with one BIG MISTAKE. Making a magazine holding more than 7 rounds illegal along with assualt weapons. What they forgot to consider was law enforcement. So now law enforcement if in a tactical situation can only have 7 rounds in their weapons. OOOOOOPS CLOWNS

Patriot, Help me out. I don't like CC. I want to know who is carrying a gun where ever I am. Seems to me that CC was banned historically for this reason. The honest gunman strapped his gun to his hip for the world to see. Gun laws are getting beyond the ability for the common man to follow and understand. Coming back from Florida zipping thru dry states the club car closed and opened accordingly. We didn't lose our drinks or have to leave the club car just couldn't buy until the train was out of the county. Seems to me county govt. should step up and pass law governing CC or better yet abolish existing gun laws banning shooting a gun in the county. Did you read this week about all the BB gun vandalism here in OC? I remember being most upset when I read my son had a weapons charge for shooting a pellet gun. Further, the charge did not read that the gun was a pellet. Sneaky, Sneaky, cops no wonder I don't respect or admire them in any form or shape.

Where has the mayor gone besides DC for the US Mayors Conference?
