Oak Creek Fireworks Show Will Go On

But in the midst of a dry summer, officials urge residents not to set off fireworks of their own.

The Oak Creek fireworks display will be held as scheduled July 4, but will be closely monitored by the Oak Creek Fire Department in the midst of the dry conditions.

In addition, city officials are urging residents not to set off their own fireworks. They are already banned in Oak Creek, but are particularly dangerous now given the weather, Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi said.

"Sparklers, fire crackers, bottle rockets, and other fireworks can be dangerous not only to the person using them, but also to friends, family, and neighbors," Scaffidi ο»Ώwrote in his Mayor's Messageο»Ώ. "Given the extremely dry conditions we’re experiencing, it is important that all of our residents refrain from using personal fireworks to avoid starting fires, and causing injury."

The official fireworks display is scheduled for 9 p.m. near , 9330 S. Shepard Ave. Fourth of July festivities at 9 a.m.

The last time fireworks were not held on July 4 was in 2000, after the city was hit by huge rains, winds and even a tiny tornado two days earlier. Much of the city was without power on July 3 and the parking lot at the Legion was under water.

The fireworks were rescheduled for a few weeks later.
