Oak Creek Police Chief Meets With Obama

Chief John Edwards and police chiefs from Aurora, Colo. and Newtown, Conn. were part of a meeting at the White House on gun violence.

Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards and police chiefs from Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., met with President Barack Obama Monday to discuss gun violence.

Obama is drawing attention to the worst shootings of 2012 as the administration pushes a package of gun reform proposals.

Edwards told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the president's reforms likely would not have changed the events of Aug. 5, when a white supremacist killed six Oak Creek Sikh temple members. Gunman Wade Michael Page purchased a 9-millimeter handgun legally prior to the shooting and was not barred from owning it.

But in a shooting at an Oak Creek hotel in 2004, the gunman was a felon armed with an automatic weapon. Felons are prohibited from possessing a gun.

"We have to start somewhere. Someone in the meeting said 'how can we as Americans not do anything?'" Edwards told the newspaper. "We have to put things in place so they don't happen anymore."

Edwards said he wants a comprehensive way to trace ownership of guns, noting that car sellers must file paperwork after transferring ownership of vehicles, but gun sellers do not.

Oak Creek and other cities in which mass shootings took place have been in the center of a nationwide debate over how to address gun violence. Mayor Steve Scaffidi met with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden Jan. 16.

Our Fabulous Sherriff David Clarke said it best!!! Be a responsible citizen, take a firearms training course or several and arm yourself for self defense. Do not Mr Edwards try and take our guns away or push for some phonie gun control legislation here in OC. Chicage 7 gun murders overnight. Hmmmm seems to be working very well
Tpom January 28, 2013 at 04:29 PM
I agree completely. I have my CC and I love to go to the range and practice. We need education, not regulation.
Patriot January 28, 2013 at 04:45 PM
Yes Tpom it is obvious strict gun laws do not work. 7 murders in Chicago overnight. We need to adopt laws such as Switzerland. Require each and every able citizen to be trained and issued a weapon. Violent gun crime in Switzerland is basically next to nothing. The Swiss Government requires their citizens to be trained in the handling of a Government issued weapon as they are an extension to their military. A citizens army. Obamas gun control and reference to hunters and sportsman is a bunch of BS!!!!! Gun ownership is not just about hunting. Owning an assualt rifle has nothing to do with hunting but rather self defense against a tyrannical government, or enemy foriegn or domestic!! Education not legislation

How much did this trip cost us? Did they send in Air Force One to pick him up? Are Chief Edwards and Mayor Scaffidi representing your ideology on the issues? They certainly are not representing me. I don't want more laws and registrations which means more time, expense and government in my life.Patriot, if I could afford and still buy, I'd buy an assault rifle just to have one. Further, I fully agree with Sheriff Clarke. When under attack one cannot wait for police response. Will taking away guns curb the problem? I don't think so as violent persons will still exact violence. Gun mass violence is really amateur if the perp is considering death count, detection, ease of crime.
Patriot January 29, 2013 at 03:04 AM
@Vocal-Absolutely. Sheriff Clarke was right on. In most cases one may have a matter of seconds to react to a situation. Obviously more gun laws will not work considering Chicagos overnight gun violence with 7 killed. Did you hear the comments by San Diegos police cheif? He stated it will take a generation to disarm Americans with Obamas/Feinsteins gun control agenda. Scary scary stuff. This is the other part people are not hearing about. The Obama adminstrations brown shirts shutting down family farms. Check this out http://www.prisonplanet.com/morningland-dairy-raided-another-family-business-destroyed.html

Oh please! Chief Edwards! please share with us the truth President Obama has shared with you! Please tell us about the stricter gun control laws that will END THE VIOLENCE! I have a friend who said that "We should focus more on the root of the problem of these tragedies, instead of passing irrational laws that take away rights." He is an idiot, how can someone believe that. We are but mere citizens with inferior intellect to that of President Obama and our government officials. Who are these people that think we can solve our own problems? We NEED gun control. The only people that should have guns are our government. Our government and President Obama love us and are doing all they can to protect us. They have never killed innocent people like these "freedom loving" criminals... Unless you count innocent foreign people. With drone strikes we've killed 176 kids, but they were from places like Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia. Those people don't matter they're not Americans. In fact it's their own fault that they don't accept the rule of our government of superior intellect. These drone strikes work pretty well. Thank god for the NDAA. I'm glad Obama has a kill list, he should put all these freedom loving people who aren't willing to submit to government on the list. -The Mind of Statist loving Obama Zombie.

What is wrong with local government, specifically our Mayor, Mr. Scaffidi? Does he really think he can get away with pushing his own political future agenda against the wishes of the residents of Oak Creek? Yes, he does. He thinks he can further his personal agenda at our expense in this case possible demise when we don't have the fire power to protect ourselves and others. Under state law, the power of Mayor's, he dictates policy to the Chief of Police and when he acts against us what is our recourse? Will the residents of the city step up to the plate and take affirmative action? I believe affirmative action is still legal a legal avenue of approach if residents want to invest thousands in legal fees, which they won't and Steve acts knowing residens have necessary knowledge and concern. The sheeple to date have been denied the right to step up to the mic and ask critical questions. Were not allowed to know what really happened. Edwards claims he was in complete control of our department through out the Sikh Temple Incident. How this could be is beyond me per his statements and the fact that he was not available when the incident went down. I also heard yesterday that he and his department were criticized for their response to the incident based on the Sikh's call record to the station for assistance over time. Reportedly, the police had responded to several "wolf" calls which accounts for the fact that a supervisor, a LT. responded to the suspected routine call. Whats New?
Be Logical January 29, 2013 at 01:21 PM
The insanity of these arguments is beyond ridiculous...The Mayor and the Chief have said ad nauseum that they want to make sure that the people that shouldn't have guns don't have them. Is there a big disagreement out there on that point? If you are a felon, or mentally ill, you don't have the right to have a gun. Simple as that. As for the argument that the Sikh Shooting was mishandled, every police agency in the state and the country views the work done on August 5th as exemplary, and the response is now being used as a teaching opportunity for law enforcement. No Conspiracy there...Last point, since I've spoken at Council meetings many times, and always am allowed to make my points, I think what the Mayor is saying, is that you if you want to get in front of the Council, and name call, and spout conspiracy theories, and other insane ramblings, you probably need to find a different venue for it. Wasting the Council or City Staff's time on nonsense is not a good use of taxpayer funds.

What were saying is the obvious, NOTHING can be done to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of people that should not use them be it a golf club, beer bottle, ball bat, gun, knife or other. The chief and mayor are wasting precious tax dollars spouting nonsensical verbiage and you illogical just don't get it now do you? If I'm a non-violent drunk driving or non-support felon you believe I shouldn't own or use a gun? Wheres your logic on this one? But it's old law now isn't it. Sikh shooting was not handled properly as evidenced by all the changes currently being implemented at the station. Further, I heard yesterday that OC Police were found negligent by FBI for their handling of response to the incident but you didn't know this now did ya. Until the Mayor agrees to open the floor to meaningful discussion the residents and Sikh will remain in the dark. They created a hero as a diversionary tactic. Do you really think Brian Murphy acted heroically? I don't. I think he broke protocol per the Sikhs history of reported wolf cries assuming it was just another false alarm. His job was not to go to the aide of a victim leaving himself wide open to harm. Victim assist is the job of clean-up, his job was to id and confine the perp, Wade Page but the highly trained officer didn't now did he? In breaking protocol he left himself wide open and us, the residents hanging with the bills. OF course every police agency is responding to the temple shooting teaching what shouldn't be.

FURTHER, Illogical, Seeing the Mayor and Chief are traveling all over the country seeking enlightenment when are we going to have public access to reports and them under the spotlights answering critical questions to the public of what they have learned instead of "shove it down your throat decree's out of Washington, President Obama and Biden? You call yourself an American I imagine, is that an American without balls, a sissy standing in the doorway ready to run? Methinks so. I caution you, (share conspiracy theory) to remember Joe Biden wrote the Patriot Act post Oklahoma City. Remember Timothy McVeigh, the ex Marine who reportedly was working with government officials. Govt. Officials who promoted McVeigh's violent actions who did not intervene to stop the killing of their own minions. Very similar to the current Washington State Case where govt. officials promoted the accused terrorist use of explosives and violence then charged him as a terrorist. McVeigh is dead he cannot speak, he cannot tell us what really went down. BUT, we do know Joe Biden's mode of operatis now don't we. NO other law but the Patriot Act has curtailed our freedoms and not afforded us protection but we don't see promotion of repeal. Instead were seeing the country die. You just continue to promote lack of accountability, denial of transparency in govt.you just continue to get up to the mic but please take your meds prior you obviously need them to continue to color and guise the truths we seek.
OC Oldtimer January 29, 2013 at 03:42 PM
Other than Be Logical, it frightens me to imagine the rest of you with a gun. You are exactly the type of people who shouldn't have one!!! As for vocal loco - I think you should keep your thoughts about Lt. Murphy to yourself. He acted as a hero and will remain a hero to many of us! If you don't believe that, go to the Sikh Temple and ask the Sikhs what they think!
Joseph January 29, 2013 at 04:01 PM
So why is it the people from the Sikh Temple are getting firearm training? Oh, you didn't hear about that did you?
Terri January 29, 2013 at 04:15 PM
Oc Oldtimer-Agreed!! Completely!
Patriot January 29, 2013 at 04:50 PM
Vocal is right on with her comments. All of you clueless sheeples just keep drinking the kool aid and keep your heads buried in the sand. Then one day when you wake up and you have to ask for permission to take your car out of your garage u can say what happened.
vocal local 1 January 29, 2013 at 05:03 PM
I think not. The public deserves honesty and accountability. When I raised issue on Lt. Murphy's rise to fame as a hero right after the incident I was told my questions were insensitive, were inappropriate. Nonsense, his actions were line of duty; he didn't follow established protocol. He put himself in harms way resulting in costly personal injury, the potential for rising insurance costs and caps and had there been four perps as the call ins reported did not service in his official capacity as a police officer to protect others that were not armed to protect self and others. Mayor Scaffidi was willing to put the issue up for discussion prior to meeting with the FBI right before the story changed. Post, he declared a proclamation and ignored resident requests for open discussion which to date he maintains. Do you really not want to know what happened that day? Your an old timer? How long have you been paying attention and maintaining silence while our great city and debt develops around us or should I write around the desires of We Energies/Wis Park? As far as the Sikhs, you'd have to understand Indian culture to understand their fears of the establishment and authority figures. How they will try to please to avoid confrontation and the consequences if at all possible. Such attitude is truly not Sikh but its the way things are most noteworthy now with the loss of key temple leaders.

Are any of you actually reading what is being said????
oak creek resident January 30, 2013 at 12:28 AM
All I can say is this. The past Mayor of Oak Creek, Mayor Dick Bolender (R.I.P.) once said at a public meeting, even if he didn't agree over a issue, he would die defending the Constitution. I will always remember him for that statement. It showed me what kind of a man he was. After reading this article and some of these comments, I am very fearful for the citizens of Oak Creek, and our Constitutional rights. I wish Mayor Bolender was still in office.
Colette Bembenek January 30, 2013 at 07:27 PM
The former police chief, Youngblood, fled Oak Creek after being exposed as a 'player' and having had an affair with an O.C. police officer female. The present one.......and the topic; as getaclue said, "Are any of U actually reading what is being said ?" Good luck on this political arena/theater.
