Oak Creek Purchases Ads on Packers Radio Network

The city will spend up to $20,000 on promotional ads that will run during pre- and post-game shows.

Continuing efforts to re-brand itself, the city of Oak Creek has approved spending up to $20,000 on advertisements promoting the city during Green Bay Packers radio broadcasts.

Journal Broadcast Group, which owns the Packers' flagship station, WTMJ, approached the city about marketing Oak Creek during pre- and post-game shows during the 2013-14 season, Community Development Director Doug Seymour said in a report to council members.

Several city officials embraced the idea, saying it would reinforce marketing efforts that have been ongoing since last year. With major development projects including Drexel Town Square in the works, the city hired a marketing consulting firm and has released a new logo and branding.

Some aldermen were hesitant to purchase airtime at this point, with developments still in early stages. Others, however, felt the ads were an opportunity to expand the overall presence and name recognition of Oak Creek, irrespective of those projects.

The council approved the ads 4-2, with Aldermen Michael Toman and Steve Kurkowski opposed.

The money for the ads will come from hotel/motel taxes, which are designed to be used for marketing-type activities.

The Packers Radio Network includes 42 stations in Wisconsin and eight more in Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and South Dakota.
