Oak Creek Stays In Gun Reform Debate

President Barack Obama mentioned the Aug. 5 mass shooting at the Oak Creek Sikh temple as he laid out a comprehensive package to address gun violence.

In laying out a comprehensive plan to address gun violence Wednesday, President Barack Obama again referenced the Aug. 5 mass shooting in Oak Creek.

"We have the right to worship freely and safely; that right was denied to Sikhs in Oak Creek, Wisconsin," Obama said.

Oak Creek has been in the middle of the nationwide debate over gun reforms. Obama has mentioned the city, along with several other communities where mass shootings have taken place, in multiple speeches since the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Ct.

"The most fundamental set of rights, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, fundamental rights that were denied to college students at Virginia Tech, high school students at Columbine and elementary school students in Newtown, and kids on street corners in Chicago, are too frequent a basis to tolerate," Obama said.

In addition, Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi arrived in Washington on Wednesday and met with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

In a statement released through the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group, of which Scaffidi is a member, he said:

"As a mayor of a city impacted by a horrific act of gun violence in August of 2012, I was invited to be in the audience today as President Obama and Vice President Biden began a discussion on curbing the cycle of violence in our country. While partisan politics continues to destroy our culture of open and honest public discourse, I am hopeful that regardless of party, all elected officials will work constructively to find real solutions to these issues."

OC mayor said this?:"As a mayor of a city impacted by a horrific act of gun violence in August of 2012, I was invited to be in the audience today as President Obama and Vice President Biden began a discussion on curbing the cycle of violence in our country. While partisan politics continues to destroy our culture of open and honest public discourse, " OPEN AND HONEST PUBLIC DISCOURSE? What a lair. He won't even allow open and honest public discourse in Oak Creek. We still have not been able to stand up at the Mic and ask critical questions about the Temple shooting five months post. Instead were forced to listen to Hate crime nonsense as he hob nobs with the big wigs. Scaffidi's attitudes and behaviors against openness and discussion are also evidenced in his voting record as an alderman and mayor. Scaffidi supported repeal of Direct Legislation which legally mandated referendums on spending. Repeal was a six man yea vote. I can't remember which alderman introduced the repeal but it's in the record I do think it was none other than honorable mayor Scaffidi. When is Stevie going to allow the public to ask critical questions? He's not prepared to enter into any open public debate with his ideology on closed sessions and refusal to allow the residents of Oak Creek Voice. Someone really should start a RECALL and end his misery. This is your elected leader speaking against the voice of the residents at a national level. Do something or crawl back in your hovel and shut up.

@Vocal-I could not agree with you more. Can you share with me the procedures to start a recall!!! As a resident of Oak Creek I am appalled at the Mayors attitude last Saturday during the forum. His attitude of I dont want to argue, bicker or play politics. He said its a waste of time and he was not going to do it. So to me that says if as a citizen of Oak Creek and I disagree with the Mayors ideology he is not interested in what I have to say. I say BS to that. As Obama stood up there yesterday surrounding himself with children just as Hitler and Stalin did back in the day, nothing he is proposing will curb gun violence. Nothing he proposed would have prevented Sandy Hook. Yet its another power grab by the administration stripping away more of our rights and he used the children as a pawn. To address the AFC with regards to allowing Drs to ask paitents specific questions regarding gun ownership ect is a direct invasion of privacy. Not to mention just a tactic for the Feds to assign labels to people. Once labeled then they can come and take your weapons away. Little by little slowly but surely disarming the America people. So vocal if we could get together so I can get some direction on starting a recall that would be great!!

Patriot, Recall Elections are in the WI Statutes. You have to register with the city clerk. She will have all the info. You need X% of the last governors election in signatures. Clerk will figure that number out for you and you have X days to circulate the petitions for the required number of signatures. You need about forty people to collect the signatures. Count me in as a petitioner I've got the time to hit the streets.

Patriot, You can't recall an elected official the first year of their term. Steves started last April. Walker hadn't served one year but still the recall started. I don't remember quite how that worked. Perhaps you can start to collect the signatures prior but have to file them on the annual date. Check with the City Clerk for more info. He can be recalled for anything. Recall is Affirmative Action. The only power we have when our elect go against our wishes. We never should have allowed Bolendar to serve three terms all this action is left over from the Bolendar years. Scaffidi was on the council and voted in support of most of the measures. They present a united front to defer accountability. Scaffidi is much more dangerous as he's more intelligent. Agrees with everyone then does his thing. Was the man with the same surname at Tuesday's meeting, officially working on this project an out of town relative of the Mayor?
